Good Afternoon!

Our kindergarteners kicked off their Tuesday by measuring five different things in our classroom using the tape measurer. When they were done measuring something, they wrote the length down in their binders. When they had measured everything, we talked about what the longest item was as well as the shortest.

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

PREK1 group friends came to the board where they found their name and read the directions. Children either wrote their name by the longest popsicle stick or shortest popsicle stick.

At the round table, we offered a scale for kids to explore.  Kids worked as partners.  One friend added something to one side of the scale, and the other friend tried to balance the scale adding items to the other side.  We found that for instance, “One stone weighs the same as seven popsicle sticks, so a stone is heavier than a popsicle stick: We need seven popsicle sticks to equal the weight of one stone.”

PREK2:  This morning one of our younger friends came into school talking about slugs.  He had discovered holes in his pumpkin and this morning found that the holes were made by a slug eating it.  We found some slugs outside in the garden and several other kids became interested as well.  We read the story “A Slugs Life” from the science area for our group story in response to this interest.  After group, we tried to remember one thing we learned from the book about slugs.

…Our PREK2 journal group has been interested in practicing letters during journal time!  What a great trend!
