Good afternoon!

Our kindergarten sign in this morning focused on identifying the highest and lowest unifix cube tower. Each child got three notecards with a variety of number written on it. For each number, they created a unifix tower for that specific number. When they were done with a card, they documented the highest tower number and lowest tower number in their binder.

This activity peaked the interest of several other younger kiddos who explored the cubes at the table! It was a fantastic interest lead activity that allowed children to work on their one to one correspondence skills. We even had a four year old ask, “How do you get to 8?…Oh yeah! You add four and four.”

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

This morning, one of our older friends worked on a project with one of our youngest friends.  They were building a race track together.  Our older friend was very patient with our younger friend, showing him how to build the track.  He even gave words of encouragement saying things like, “that’s a good idea!”  This is a great example of why we love the multi-age classroom.  Younger kids can learn an amazing amount from older peers, not only how to do things, but how to treat others.  Our older friends learn a great deal about teaching and leadership by helping and working with younger peers.  There are benefits for all ages!

At the art center kids explored painting with sponges.  Several kids wanted to experiment with different ways to use these and created multitudes of paintings.  We like to encourage this kind of in-depth exploration and experimentation with materials as it leads to development of higher level thinking skills (creative problem solving, executive planning).  Shown below, Eleanor tried a variety of ways to use marks and make patterns!

PREK2:  This morning, some of our younger friends were reading books about bugs in the science area.  I asked if they would enjoy learning more about them during group.  They were looking at a book about Pill Bugs, so we chose that one.  After the story, kids recalled what they learned.  Older kids were able to recall details, while youngest kids looked at a picture in the story and then were able to recall what was read.
