Good afternoon!

This morning, we began work on a “Solar Systems” research project for our kindergarteners.  Our oldest kids began sharing interest in the solar system and relaying facts they knew about different planets in the past couple of weeks.  We decided to create a project around this.  Today we began a research journal.  We drew a picture of each planet, listened to a short paragraph about each planet, then recorded one or two things we remembered in our journal.  We practiced using punctation in our sentences.   It was a great morning filled with questions and comments about each planet from our kids!

K.W.5: With support, build understanding of a topic using various sources. (Identify relevant pictures, charts, grade- appropriate texts, personal experiences, or people as sources) (LAST WEEKS FAB THAT WE’RE EXTENDING INTO THIS WEEK BECAUSE OF INTEREST!)

We kicked off our week by talking about punctuation marks. Both kindergarteners had already started to explore punctuation marks earlier in the morning when they were creating their solar system information booklet.

Each kindergartener was given six sentences with a mixture of different ending punctuation. They identified it and followed the key, highlighting the marks with a certain colored marker. We talked about when we use each.

For PREK1 group, a kindergartener asked to read an excerpt from ‘Here and There’ because they had been talking about Earth, among other planets, this morning! Before we started reading, each group member shared how they’re helpful in their household. One friend shared, “I make sure that nothing is left on the floor for my dog to get!”. We read about chores and how children from different countries are expected to participate in the family household. We found out that in some countries, girls are expected to do more chores than boys. The girls in group were not a fan of this! We also learned that in a few countries, household chores include walking miles to get water for their family. At the end, we got out the map of the world and identified countries that we had learned about such as China, Japan, Belgium, and Uganda.

The welcome activity revolved around sorting. A mixture of black and white beans were made available with glass jars and tongs. Children worked to sort the beans in whatever way they wish!
