Good afternoon!

This morning several kids were interested in the process of setting up a new “Bio-active” fish tank.  We added aquatic soil, water and live plants to the aquarium this morning.  We also added its first residents, some snails.  We got into some interesting conversations during this process.  We talked about the similarities and differences between fish and people.  We learned that fish and people are both vertebrates, meaning we both have back bones, while the snails are invertebrates because they have no bones.  We also learned that some kinds of aquatic plants in our tank root in the soil at the bottom of the tank while other float on top and let their roots hang in the water.  Later, we set up a water activity so kids could explore “aquarium play”.
