Happy Friday!

This morning we danced to several songs by Greg and Steve. The Body Rock, Jump Down, Turn Around and The Mack Chicken Dance, were a few of the songs. One of our friends really enjoyed dancing to the Chicken Dance.

We then headed into the kitchen to paint with Q-tips.  We used blue, red and yellow tempera paint. We mixed our colors together to create new colors onto our papers.

Good Afternoon!

We continued to discuss community helpers today in our PREK1 group. Group members came up to the board where they found their name and chose a card that had a community helper written on it. They came up with one tool that their community helper needs to do their job!

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

Today, we finally got to create our long awaited volcanic eruption!  Everyone was so excited to see what would happen.  We talked about each ingredient that would go into the volcano and how those things would create a chemical reaction when they were combined.  We added soap, water and baking soda which filled the volcano.  When we added the vinegar, we got the volcano to erupt with a pulse of foam which cascaded down the sides like a real volcano!  We got to try adding more baking soda so we could watch the change in the reaction.  It was exciting to see!  We even got to talk about how the foam covered the ground like real lava, which is how new rock is formed when it cools.

Good afternoon!

We have been practicing patience as our volcano creation dries.  We decided to work on a volcano drawing in the art area this morning.  We used oil pastels to draw the volcano.  Many kids chose to add lava flowing down the sides or magma pushing up from under the ground.  These things were illustrated in the book we read and we were excited to see how much of this information kids were able to retain!

Good Afternoon!

We continued to dive into our FAB’s for the week and today, we focused on community helpers. Each PREK1 group member came to the board where they found their name and solved their community helper riddle. Majority of children took the initiative to write their answer by themselves with help from a teacher as they sounded out the word.

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

Just before break we read a book about volcanos, which captured the interest of several of our older kids.  We planned to create a volcanic eruption through an experiment in our classroom which the kids were very excited about.  Returning from break, two kids asked about the volcano upon entry on day one…so clearly still interested even after two weeks :).

This morning, we began work on the volcano.  We worked together to make a batch of salt dough.  Next, we placed a bottle on a tray as the volcano’s crater and used the salt dough to build a volcano around it.  We ran out of dough so had to stop and make a second batch.  Since some of the kids felt that the dough was not a good color for a volcano, we added some brown food coloring.  The kids also shared that we should have grass around the volcano so we added some green play dough we already had in the classroom.  A few kids also decided to use some dough to add “rocks” around the bottom.  They were quite invested in making the volcano as realistic as possible and I loved how they had so many ideas to add to the project!  We are anxiously waiting for the project to dry so we can used a few benign household materials to create the eruption.

Good Afternoon!

**Reminder: Wee Friends will be closed on Friday, February 20th for our yearly conferences!

Welcome back! We kicked off 2026 by having a jam packed morning full of exploration and outside time. Our PREK1 kids came to the sign in board where we went over rules that we follow inside to keep ourselves and our peers safe. An important word was missing in each sentence so children worked to fill in their sentence with the correct missing word.

Social Studies: K.2.3 Give examples of classroom and school rules and explain how each helps us.

Today we explored a “sensory cereal” activity that helped teach how to serve one’s self at the table.  We pretended we had a very colorful cereal (puff balls) with milk (white paint tinted water) and we were serving ourselves breakfast.  We practiced using the spoon to fill our bowl and then carefully pouring ourselves milk on our cereal and a cup of milk just like we would at breakfast time.  As imaginative play progressed around this activity, one of our kids wondered if there was a way to get the pompoms out of the milk more effectively.  We decided to try a few options like funnels and several kinds of strainers.  As we tested different options, we decided what what we thought worked best… so our fine motor imaginative play evolved into some create problem solving.

We had some time outside in the snow.  We were busy sliding down the slide, scooping the snow with a spoon into a measuring cup and playing with the trucks.
