Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our week by working with shapes for our PREK1 sign in. Each kiddo came up to the board where we read the shape under their name. We read the shape name and found it on the board. They taped their name inside of the shape.

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube.

IMG_2972IMG_7736IMG_7737

We explored two and three dimensional shapes and how they can fit together this morning.  At the round table, we chose from circles, triangles, rectangles and squares as well as the three dimensional versions…cylinders, pyramids, cubes and prisms.  As we created our buildings, we looked for each shape and talked about how they related.  For instance, one friend built a “tree house”.  We talked about seeing both circles and cylinders, squares and cubes, in the design.

IMG_7706IMG_7709

In the art center, friends created patterns and mosaics using a sand tray of circles/ovals or rectangles/squares.  We talked about the differences in what we could create with these two shapes.

IMG_7733IMG_7772

In the kitchen, friends enjoyed baking with Ms. Ashley.  We helped measure flour, salt and baking powder to make some delicious banana muffins!

Happy Snowy Friday!

This morning, we played with snow in Tuff Trays! Rose and Diana joined, getting snow and a sea creature of their own! We scooped into bowls, played with animals and explored some plastic letters as well.

IMG_7756IMG_7766(1)IMG_7763(1)IMG_7760IMG_7771(1)IMG_7769(1)

Miss Audrey set up some tumble mats around the front, and we did lots of climbing! Two friends used one of the tumble mats to stack rings on.

Happy Friday!

We ended our week by working with one to one correspondence during our PREK1 group sign in activity. Each group member came to the board where they found their name and if they were able, identified the number. Next, they looked on a tray with several notecards with various number configurations on each card. They sorted through the cards to find the card that matched their number.

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

IMG_2933IMG_2926IMG_2930

This morning, we offered an activity that encouraged counting and one to one correspondence, though it was open ended.  A few friends began creating their own “board games” with the pieces.  We explored this further with some non-specific game mats we had in the classroom to see what the kids would do.  They created several unique games, like one that involved hopping from square to square and then adding the number of objects on the square a player landed on.  We believe kids will remember numbers and counted objects better when they are allowed to get creative with the learning materials, keeping things interesting for them!

Happy Wednesday!

This morning, our friends dressed up and pretended to go to Trader Joe’s! They told Miss Bekah and Miss Audrey, “Bye.” One friend told Miss Audrey she was getting a spider from Trader Joe’s. Miss Bekah also found some play shopping baskets for them, and they spent the morning shopping the around the classroom.

Good Afternoon–

Our PREK1 group kiddos came to the sign in board one at a time where they worked with their name. Each friend counted the number of syllables in their name and wrote their name under the correct group. One friend said, “I already know the number of syllables in my name!” So, she tried to count the number of syllables in her middle and last name! She found out that all three names have two syllables in each!

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

This morning, several kids were talking about swimming pools.  One of our older friends had the idea to make a swimming pool so we decided to do that in the Tuff Tray.  We talked about what we could use in imaginative play in order to create the things we wanted to be a part of the swimming pools.  Friends wanted to have a diving board and floaties in the pools.  One friend had the idea to add puff balls for floaties.  We added some rings we had for innertubes.  Another friends used a flat rock to make a diving board.  Kids had more ideas as we went.  We added boats and even a car wash to the swimming pool!  This is great exercise for the imagination and for a collaborative dialoged geared toward creative problem solving.

Good afternoon!

Today we worked on a group activity at the round table.  We used stencils or drew shapes on our paper covered table.  Then we used beads to create patterns, or follow the lines.  We worked on our counting skills as we went.  A few kids got creative drawing fruit, then used the beads to fill in the colors.  They made a blueberry, strawberry and an orange.

IMG_7414IMG_7433IMG_7419

We are seeing such beautiful work from both of our journaling groups!  Kids are able to work at their own level, from recognizing their name, to kid spelling.  As we look at our multiage range, in their various stages of development,  its easy to see the tremendous growth in our kids over time.

Good afternoon!

This morning we engaged in a new sensory experience in the sensory table, moon sand.  We enjoyed scooping it up with a measuring cup or spoon and pouring it into a different container.  We also explored the different water/land animals  in the table.

IMG_7622(1)IMG_7619(1)IMG_7617(1)IMG_7612(1)IMG_7604

Throughout the morning, we also played with Magna-Tiles.. Rowan and another friend also spent some time throwing and rolling balls!

We then headed outside to get some fresh air and play.  We were busy riding on the teeter totter with a friend, working on our balance skills while walking on the balance beams, digging in the sandbox, driving cars down the ramps and going down the slide.

Happy Monday!

This morning we brought down the sheer curtain to run/walk through!  We had lots of laughs as we went through it to see our friends.

Then, Miss Audrey used hollow wooden blocks to make a track for cars to drive along. One friend played with a zebra while others drove their cars along. After her friends were done, Diana had a turn with the cars too!

Happy Monday!

This morning a couple of our friends asked if we would be using the Tuff tray today.  I asked if they had an idea for the Tuff tray which it turned out, they did.  They asked if we could put snow in it from outside and then add some construction vehicles so they could pretend to be moving snow.  I thought it was a great idea and followed the description they gave, setting it up how they imagined.  This project took every bit of snow we had accessible in the back yard, but it worked:)  It’s great for kids to drive project ideas like this.  They use their executive planning and creative problem solving skills to create something the whole class benefits from.  When kids are able to see their ideas take shape in a way, it builds their self esteem.
