Good afternoon.

Rowan sought out the wall abacus board and was happily engaged utilizing her fine motor skills with all the different patterns that she could push the balls through. She had a great time and encouraged her peers to come and play along!

Good Afternoon!

We read the third and final story in our Miss Nelson storybook during K/PREK1. Today’s story was titled, ‘Miss Nelson Has A Field Day’. Since it was a story that no one had read before, there was a lot of predictions. Our favorite character in the story is Miss Viola Swamp. We’ve talked about her personality and characteristics that make her unique.

This week, we’re focusing on two aspects of writing: punctuation and capitalization. During the kindergarteners sign in, they had to choose three sentence strips and circle the capital letters that they saw. I transferred these sentences to the chalkboard to see if children noticed a trend. After they helped me identify the capital letters, children quickly noticed that the first letters of each sentence were circled. We also talked about days of the week, months, and names as being words that we always capitalize.

K.W.6.2a: Capitalization–Capitalizing the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I.

DSCN1542DSCN1545DSCN1550

In PREK2, children took various pictures and sorted them into three groups. The three groups revolved around the senses and what sense you would use with each picture. For example, the picture of fireworks was placed under the sense ‘hear’.

Children have asking a lot lately to help us clean! This morning, we focused on the toys in the habitrail area. Using warm water and soap, friends took turns sanitizing the animals. While cleaning up habitrail (blocks specifically), the phrase that kids love to say is, “Teamwork makes the dream work.”

Isn’t that the truth!

DSCN1499DSCN1511DSCN1500

We saw books everywhere this morning: science area, reading area, and the music rug. Children read by themselves as well as with another peer. While most children aren’t reading at this age, they are still learning and exhibiting important aspects of literacy including turning the pages from right to left, telling the story through pictures, and identification of rhymes, letters, and punctuation.

Books also brings about our most important goal: love of learning. While reading stories, children often have questions about a character or theme that they identify and want to learn more about.

Good afternoon and happy Monday. I hope you enjoyed the gorgeous weekend.

This morning we engaged in the pegs and peg boards.

This activity enhances fine motor, hand-eye coordination along with color and shape recognition skills. We can match the colors of the pegs to the boards, we can make a tall towering line with the pegs or we can also just simply fill all of the holes that are available in the peg boards. Whichever way we choose, we love to have fun with this activity.

We then decided to read some stories. Reading always makes us happy. Sometime we like to read to ourselves other times we enjoy a teacher reading to us.

Happy Monday!

On Friday in K/PREK1, we read ‘Miss Nelson Is Missing’. Children enjoyed it so much that today, we read the second story in the series, “Miss Nelson Came Back’. There were several times throughout the story where we predicted what would happen next as children hadn’t read the story before!

Before we completed our calendar activity, we discussed punctuation and the difference forms we use.

I read a sentence at a time and children had to say if we should put a period, exclamation point, or question mark at the end. Friends listened to my voice to distinguish between an exclamation point and period. “Oh, your voice is high and excited so it’s an exclamation point!”

K.W6.2b: Punctuation– Recognizing and naming end punctuation.

DSCN1453DSCN1452DSCN1456

In PREK2, children took various objects and sorted them into two different groups: magnetic and not magnetic.

DSCN1441DSCN1443

Penny and Grady used dominos and colorful counters to create various displays, buildings, and games.

First, Grady and Penny took the dominos and built a tower where they placed only green bears on their structure, creating a game called ‘Tower of Doom’.

Next, they tried to emulate each other as they built the same structures. Conversation was constant as the structures kept falling down. They talked about how to make the structures more stable and strong but since they were building on the table with thin dominos, they had to rebuild many times!

Lunch– Whole wheat pasta with shredded chicken and butter, fresh cantaloupe, and fresh carrots.

PM snack– Whole milk yogurt with granola.

Happy Friday!

We read, ‘Miss Nelson Is Missing’ in K/PREK1 and afterwards, children got to choose one shape from my hand. They had to decide where the shape went to complete a specific pattern. Once they completed the pattern, they said the pattern aloud: “rectangle, rectangle, oval, triangle, rectangle, rectangle, oval, triangle”.

K.CA.5: Create, extend, and give an appropriate rule for simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers and shapes.

DSCN1374DSCN1377DSCN1380

In PREK2, children used a number line and die to practice addition and subtraction. For example, Sophia rolled a 4 and she moved her piece to the 4. Then, another friend rolled a 2 so they added 2 to the 4 and moved the piece to 6.

DSCN1370DSCN1372

There were several conversations today about practicing. We had conversations about practicing to go down the pole in habitrail. We had conversations about practicing our lower case letters. If you want to become good at something, practice is important!

“Teacher Tom, I know how to pump myself on the swings now!”
“I’m happy to hear that.”
“I still have to practice it a lot.”
“That’s how you get good at things.”
