WF Daily Explorations, Thursday 8-11-11

Today, initiated by Taylor, the children did another group “sticky” study. The children gathered at different times throughout the morning at one giant piece of paper and used a variety of sticky mediums on the paper. Ironically, Tami had a really difficult time getting the “sticky” study picture to stay stuck to the wall! However, it did finally get adhered to the wall in the science room so you may want “stick” around for a few minutes and take a look at pickup tonight.

418KUyA-OPLWe all sing with the same voice
The same song, the same voice
We all sing with the same voice
And we sing in harmony

We introduced a WeeWee favorite book with song CD this morning called, We All Sing with the Same Voice. It is a beautiful song about diversity. The children liked it so much that I will be purchasing a copy for our classroom since WWF uses their copy everyday.

118Outside the children spent some time picking (and sampling) more vegetables that they were harvesting from our garden. Several children also husked some corn for the WF lunch.

For lunch we had parmesan rice, corn on the cob and cantaloupe.

WWF Flying High!

We started our morning with some of our WWF wanting to try their skills again today with our peg shape board. They did a great job, and they sure were diligent, and high achievers!

We listened to yet another new CD with an airplane song on it. We had some instant dancers, and even Finn’s dad joined in the fun. We read several airplane books, and learned about our luggage and how it is stored on the plane. We also read, “Shoo-Fly.” We have been singing that quite a bit outside recently, and it was great to have the children join in. We also sang our airplane song, and have posted the words on our board. We encourage you to sing it with your child. It is to the tune of, “I’m a Little Teapot.”

003

Our airplane collage is looking beautiful! Today we added circles in all colors. The children seemed to have a great time working on it.

024

Another beautiful day, and another beautiful day of harvesting the garden. We are still harvesting tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans. Our very own watermelon was served at luch today, with tuna on whole wheat bread, and peas.

Tomorrow will be one of our “WWF orginals” last day. Caelan and his family will be relocating to the Chicago area. We wish them all of the best in their future endeavors, and we will miss not only Caelan, but his beautiful family as well. We will have a small celebration for their new start tomorrow afternoon.

Enjoy the beautiful day!

WF Daily Explorations Wednesday August 10

We’ll go walking through the park…

We’ll keep on walking ’til it gets dark!

We’ll see the leaves on the trees

And catch the bugs in the breeze,

When we’re walking through the park!

Today we had a picnic at Nuner Elementary! We gathered a big bag of food (pb on whole wheat buns, pea pods/cucumbers and raisins) three wagons full of kids, walking buddies, four teachers and went walking….

314 319 326

We stopped and ate lunch on the soccer field, played red light/green light and then made our way to the playground.

343 355 339

Our walking friends did an excellent job safely crossing the streets and holding onto their walking buddy!

Before we left on our walk, many friends continued catching fish with their hands and in their nets. Melinda bought several new fish for today because we had to say goodbye to most of our fish from yesterday.

Our bear exploration continued today with a sensory experiment: in bowls, we put several foods we thought bears might eat. We closed our eyes and using three senses: smell, touch and taste, we guessed which food we were holding.

Paulina, who spent the morning teaching Wee Friends, recorded words from our sensory experiment in Spanish. She then moved friends to hopscotch for a Spanish lesson! Miel and Oso are two words we learned.

WWF Daily Explorations, 8.9.11

What a beautiful day! We sure took advantage of the cooler temperatures and sunshine!

This morning a group of children worked on our new peg shape board. This was great way to have the children use their fine motor skills to match the shape on the correct pegs. It also helped them to learn various shapes and colors. It was interesting to see some of them parallel played with this, and while others chose to do it individually.

We listened to a song about airplanes. Some of the children worked in the kitchen on painting an airplane. We used an array of paint colors, along with brushes, our fingers, and some scouring pads with handles. Tomorrow we will work on gluing different shapes and textures on it. For those who opted not to paint, Marty read books to the children in054diviually, or in a group.

Our outside time today was spent on our bikes, playing in the sand, observing our garden, and taking a walk in the wagons, and stroller. We saw so many different beautiful flowers, and looked for circles. This group was on the ball! We would stop and observe something, then Finn would tell us, “It is time to move on!” We were lucky enough to see an airplane on our journey! Upon our return to WWF, we read two books outside.

068

For lunch today, we had some delicious turkey sandwiches on whole wheat buns, corn, and applesauce. We listened to a new airplane song, then settled down with two stories before nap.

A special thank you to Miss Amy for taking the time out of her busy schedule to stop by the library and pick us up some shape and airplane books. She also joined us on our walk today. In addition to Amy, Miss Tami also joined us as well. What a nice treat!

As Friday draws near, Marty’s daughter Bre, who has been helping us all summer, will be returning to her junior year at Mishawaka High School. She has been a real asset to our program, and her love, time, and dedication has not gone unnoticed. We will miss her!

This afternoon we will build another run way using our blocks, as well as having some outdoor exploration time.

Enjoy the afternoon!

WF Daily Explorations, Tuesday 8-9-11

It was a SWIMMING morning…

025

Our sensory table grabbed everyone’s attention this morning. We added 8 live goldfish for the children to catch with nets, hold, and examine. Some children were very timid at first, but everyone gained the confidence to touch or even hold the wiggly little fish. F.1.5 Use the five senses (touching, smelling, seeing, hearing, tasting) to investigate the environment and to gather information.
F.1.6 Use a variety of “scientific tools” (e.g., balance scales, magnifying glasses, measuring cups, food coloring) to investigate the environment and to gather information.
F.1.7 Use age appropriate scientific equipment (e.g., magnifying glasses, thermometer, scales) when participating in scientific experiences.
F.1.8 Engage in a scientific experiment with a peer or with small groups of children using sharing/turn taking skills.
061

Melinda draped a large sheet over our jungle gym.

Friends pretended it was a tent.

Inspired by the big sheet, other friends decided to create a bear cave in housekeeping. We found some instrumental music entitled “Grizzly Bear Cubs with their Mom after Breakfast” and created a WF Bear Family. A small group of friends hibernated in the winter, ate leaves and berries in the winter and swam and hunted for fish in the stream! We ended our experience reading We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. F.2.1 Participate freely in dramatic play activities that become more extended and complex.
F.2.2 Express self in dramatic play through story telling005, puppetry, and other language development activities.
009010 014 017

While waiting patiently for their turn to play with the REAL fish, a few friends drew pictures of fish.

We have introduced two baskets of tracing letters: upper case and lower case. Many friends are enjoying tracing letters, particularly hunting for the letters in their name and putting them together. 003

F.6.2 Combine strokes and shapes to represent letters. F.6.3 Copy a vertical line.
F.6.4 Copy a horizontal line.

For lunch we served ham and turkey on whole 001wheat bread, roasted mashed sweet potato and fruit salad (strawberry/banana/mandarin oranges).

Enjoy your day!

WWF Daily Explorations, 8.5.11

A special welcome to the newest member of the WeeWee family, Baby PK who joined us today.

This morning we listened to a CD with an airplane song. This helped us to kick off some discussion on airplanes, as Caelan and Finn seem to have a real interest in this area. The children shared some of their airplane experiences. We talked about how the plane starts on the ground and takes off into the sky. It seemed as though once they began conversing, our discussion broadened bringing more information about how airplanes work and the different uses we give to them. It was so nice to see their dialogue be what is called “child initiated,” as opposed to “teacher directed.” The children learned a new song about airplanes. Our donut shop song continues to be of interest to them. Our circle theme is still being incorporated into this, and is expanding into other shapes as well.

Once outside, Finn asked one of the teachers to draw an airplane on our chalkboard. The children all joined in suggesting we add clouds and the sun. The children used our sand pails to help pick tomatoes out of the garden this morning. This was a lot of fun for them, and they have enjoyed harvesting our crops immensley. Some friends enjoyed singing and swinging on the swing together.

019030

For lunch today we dined on whole wheat pasta with corn and tuna, peas and pineapple. The children have been working on bringing their plates to the trash to help clear them after they are done. They are doing a great job with this.

This afternoon we will make a runway out of our blocks. WWF Airlines is now boarding!

Enjoy the day~

WF Daily Explorations Monday August 8

017 025 028

Today we welcomed our friends Simon, Oliver, Owen and Nate back to Wee Friends!

Sydney, Taylor and Macy created their WF Fami010ly Tree leaves and shared them with us. We learned about each of their favorite princesses from Disneyland and saw pictures of their new Uncle! 005002

Many of our young friends have been talking about the beach! Today we explored the beach a bit with a guided improvisation of a beach visit. We started by laying on our beach towels, then feeling the silky wet sand between our toes! We dove into the water and discovered starfish! Our hands became the starfish and we wiggled and walked them and counted starfish arms.

023 027

040

031

We discovered our sensory tub had starfish! We counted the number of arms. We then moved our exploration to the art table. We drew starfish using our own fingers, and then created a stamp out of an apple’s starfish-like core.

 019 011 018

For lunch we served whole wheat pasta with chicken and corn, pineapple/orange fruit salad, peas and WF garden tomatoes!

Have a great day!

WWF Daily Explorations, 8.5.11

Happy Friday!

This morning children began their morning with one on one reading with their
teachers and free play. Outside time was spent making music. They sang the
Hello song adding different motions to it and playing the maracas. They also
sang “Aram Sam Sam” to different tempos, noticing fast and slow and moving to
the changes. Using the stretchy band, children held it in a circle formation and
danced to “Ring Around the Rosie”, “Going Around the Sun”, “jumping Shoes” and
chants in duple meter.

Some of the children also snacked on tomatoes picked by themselves from our
vegetable garden. Some children discussed with their teachers how some of the
tomatoes were green and that meant they were not ready to be picked and
eaten. After that, they eagerly looked for red ones!! 🙂 They also played with
the sprinkler while we watered the garden.

Lunch today included pizza buns, corn and blueberries.

Have a wonderful weekend!!

WF Daily Explorations Friday August 5

This morning we continued the fine motor exploration started earlier in the week: beading. Fine motor activities are important for toddler/pre-schoolers because they exercise/develop the muscles in the body that will eventually support your child’s ability to write, use utensils and other small objects, use a computer, turn pages in a book and fasten clothing.

006 007

011

In this exploration, friends used large wooden beads and plastic stretchy string. Afterwards a few older friends created necklaces with smaller plastic beads. Other ways we support our friends developing fine motor muscles are: Play-Doh, using a paintbrush, sewing, lacing boards, scissor work, Trio Legos, Magna Tiles (other toys that require fine motor strength and dexterity) and stencils.

While our Family Study is coming to a natural close, we hope you and your Wee Friend will still create and share a leaf with us! We are planning on keeping our tree up as everyone has enjoyed hearing family stories and seeing all the pictures. The Family Tree has become a meeting place for friends to get to know each better through the pictures and stories.

012

For lunch we served whole wheat penne pasta with marinara, roasted zucchini (from our garden!) and grapes.

Have a terrific weekend!!!!

WWF Daily Explorations, Thursday 8-4-11

Great things happening all “around us!”

103

This morning Miss Lisa did our donut shop color game with the children. They really seem to enjoy it and the children had fun learning their colors at the same time. We also sat in a circle and sang our jumping shoes, and wiggle songs. We listened to the book and CD “We all sing with the same voice.” The children were really into music today, so we did our stop and go song, and the song called “Play your instruments.” We brought out our shakers and maracas. Even our littlest ones were all about keeping the beat today! We also did our fast-slow song, “BINGO,” and the fire truck song.

119

122

We ventured outside this morning and enjoyed the cooler weather, yippee!!! We played “I Spy” to find circle objects. We brought out the balls and rolled them, as well as shot some baskets. The little girls all had fun in the small sandbox as we observed all the circle objects in it.

131

134

For lunch today we had scrambled eggs with fresh spinach and cheese, whole wheat toast, and apples. The kids really enjoyed it!

Miss Paulina has been out with a sore neck, and we wish her a speedy recovery! She is sure missed!

Make it a great day! Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Regards,

Lisa, Marty, Paulina and Amy
