Good snowy afternoon!

Our friends engaged with some plush snowballs this morning. They threw them in the air or used a bulldozer construction truck to pretend that they were “plowing” the snow.

IMG_8921(4)IMG_8922(4)IMG_8939(4)IMG_8943(4)

We then made our way into the kitchen for a sensory activity. We each had a plastic tray with a miniature farm animal, recycled food pouch lids, a brush, a spoon and a handful of snow from outside. We talked about how the snow felt and we all agreed that it was “cold.” Ms. Tina helped hide our friends’ farm animals in the snow and our friends used their brushes to remove the snow. We also watched as the snow melted on our tray and turned into puddles of water.

IMG_8928(3)IMG_8929(4)IMG_8931(4)IMG_8932(4)IMG_8937(4)IMG_8936(3)

We sat in plastic blocks to listen to Miss Bekah read several winter and Christmas books.

IMG_8961(4)IMG_8962(4)

We then engaged in a variety of different activities- we rode our rainbow mats, walked on stepping stones, explored our nesting cups, used the shape stackers and played with object permanence boxes.

Good Afternoon!

We used a globe to aid in our sign in question this morning for our PREK1 group kiddos. We looked at the globe and identified all of the ‘blue’ on the globe as water. Ryan said, “Like seas!”. We talked about the various types of bodies of water that make up our Earth.

Social Studies: K.3.2 Identify maps and globes as ways of representing Earth and understand the differences between a map/globe.

We had a long day indoors so we made sure to fill the time with plenty of activities!  With the windchill so low on one hand and friends eager to play in the snow on the other, we came up with a great solution.  We brought the snow inside to play with!  Friends enjoyed digging in the snow with shovels and making snowballs with ball scissors!

IMG_8297(4)IMG_8234(5)IMG_8230(4)

Elsewhere in the classroom, we offered an obstacle course to get those gross motor muscles moving!  The course came with bounce blocks, a balance beam and a trampoline!

IMG_8343(5)IMG_8340(4)IMG_8327(3)

At the round table, friends enjoyed a fine motor activity.  They used large pinecones to decorate with rubber bands, puff balls and holiday beads.

PREK2: During group today, we read the story “All You Need For A Snowman”.  After the story we talked about the things that the snowman wore in the book.  We came up with our own idea about how we would want to dress our own snowman and made a class list.

Good Afternoon!

A few of us began our morning reading books independently on the reading steps.  We also crawled on the habi-trail, engaged with a baby doll and fed it a bottle, and a friend stacked wooden loose parts on a stacker.

IMG_8890(4)IMG_8904(4)IMG_8864(4)IMG_8878(4)IMG_8902(4)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with playdough.  We used our hands and tools to manipulate it.  A friend even shared with Miss Tina that he had made a “burger.”

IMG_8905(4)IMG_8909(3)IMG_8911(4)IMG_8912(4)IMG_8913(4)

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our Wednesday by identifying what city each PREK1 group member lives in! Throughout the week, we’ve been starting to dive into maps and globes so we talked about what’s on a map, including cities!

Social Studies: K.3.2 Identify maps and globes as ways of representing Earth and understand the differences between a map/globe.

This morning we offered a loose parts activity at the round table which was designed to encourage building some kind of winter landscape.  The kids have been very excited about snow and the holiday season lately so we built upon that interest.  There were many creative snow homes made of wood blocks, cotton balls and pinecones.  The houses were intended for families of penguins!

IMG_8152(5)IMG_8143(4)IMG_8099IMG_8111(5)IMG_8092(5)

At the art center, we offered straws as a new material to get creative with.  There were lots of ideas about what to do with them.  The kids were encouraged to plan what they would make first.  Several kids took this seriously, laying out the straws in many ways before they decided.  This gave the kids an executive planning brain workout! Ryan came up with the idea of making himself a ‘piano’.  Paige made a puppet.  One friend used the straws as a structure to build a ‘bird’ with paper and straws!

IMG_8118(5)IMG_8132(6)IMG_8134(6)

It was chilly and windy but we were able to move our bodies outside for a little while before lunch! Some fresh air and a little sunshine was just what we needed!

IMG_8175(5)IMG_8185(5)

PREK2: Today we practiced a “calm breathing story” called “bear breath” to relax at the beginning of group time.  We read the story “A Snowy Day”.  Afterward, friends came up to the board to answer the question “What would you like to do with snow?”

Good afternoon!

Our friends engaged with the pop-up people this morning. They worked on identifying the color of their people and then matching them with their corresponding color slot.

IMG_8787(4)IMG_8796(4)IMG_8791(2)

Cece had some tummy time on her mat. Her friends sat near to watch her lift her head up off the mat and look around.

IMG_8806(4)IMG_8814(4)

We then made our way to the kitchen for a loose parts activity with colorful shape beads, a pipe cleaner and a pattern card. We took our beads and placed them on the pattern card as we matched them. Our friends also worked on threading their beads onto their pipe cleaners.

Several friends have been asking for holiday play opportunities so we responded!  We created a winter sensory bin with sensory snow, measuring cups and spoons as well as some arctic animals to inspire imaginative play.  The sensory snow is packable, so everyone explored making snow balls and snow homes for the arctic animals.
