Good Afternoon!

PREK1 kiddos came to the sign in board where we working with rhyming words. A snowman helped us match rhyming words using items from the snowman himself!

Each child picked a word from a tray and had to match it to something on the snowman. For example, Arthur picked the word ‘south’ and as we went through the makeup of the snowman, Arthur was able to identify ‘mouth’ as the rhyming word match to ‘south’! He taped his word next to its match and then wrote his name.

We offered a special project for older friends today.  Since we have noticed a lot of interest in maps, we created a “make your own world map out of play dough” project.  First, kids made the oceans out of blue playdough before they rolled out their green playdough and cut out the continents.  They studied a world map and arranged their continents on their own.  We talked about the name of each continent.  As friends asked questions, we learned that we live on the North American continent, that Egypt is on the African Continent, India is on the Asian continent, our friend Milo is on the South American continent right now, Antarctica is not really long and skinny because the world is really round not flat and that a Mom once saw koalas in Australia!

PREK2:  During our older kids map project this morning, there was a lot of talk about Antarctica.  At group, we read “Ten Animals in Antarctica”.  After the story, we tried to remember one animal that the book talked about.

Good Afternoon!

**Updated shot records are due before children return from Winter Break—we appreciate everyone’s help in getting these in on time for our upcoming visit in the new calendar year!

Our PREK1 friends came to the sign in board where they chose a notecard with some sort of holiday related word written on it. Each friend tried clapping out their word to see how many syllables were in their word so they could sort it into the correct group.

Today, we explored some thick gooey homemade finger paint to get our sensory experience for the day!  Friends enjoyed mixing the paint with their fingers and creating new colors.  Later, the experience evolved into mixing the jelly textured paint in bowls.  It took on the feel of jello which the kids loved.  This kind of sensory is great for regulating the nervous system while helping to integrate the brain.

Good Afternoon!

Children in PREK1 group came to the sign in board where we continued working with coins! They reached their hand into a bowl and pulled out one coin. We looked at the physical characteristics of the coin and they worked at identifying which group their coin belonged to. They taped their coin into the correct group and then we named the coin as well as the value it represented.

We enjoyed another day of puzzling and building as the class interest has continued today.  In order to build on that interest we brought out some new foam puzzles to add more variety and some different options for difficulty level.  Since so many kids are interested in puzzles right now, we needed a lot of variety so everyone could find something that met their own developmental level.

Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 sign in focused not only on coins but continuing patterns. Children came to the sign in board where they identified an AABAAB pattern using pennies and quarters. They wrote their name under what coin came next in the pattern.

There has been a lot of puzzle interest in our classroom lately.  Several kids have been wanting to challenge themselves with more difficult puzzles.  Puzzles are a wonderful activity for the brain and body.  They help to build fine motor skills, problem solving skills, memory and spatial awareness.  Puzzles help kids lengthen attention span and build focused attention.  Kids are required to practice patience as they work, then build self esteem as they enjoy the fruits of their labor.  We are happy to see this interest growing in our kids!
