Good Afternoon!

Due to air quality outdoors, we decided to make it an indoor day.  We set up a wide range of activities throughout the classroom to keep kids engaged .  Kids practiced language arts in the reading area listening to and looking at books.  Older friends made books in the art center practicing their writing and kid-spelling.

Kids had access to water play and sensory throughout the classroom.  Several kids were particularly engaged with the hand mixer we introduced.  They worked on their fine motor and coordination to get the mixer to work, making bubbles with soap and water.  Kids with a strong interest in the mechanics of how things work were enthralled with this contraption, watching the moving parts with great focus!

We brought the outside into the art center with a painting activity for kids to explore.  Kids picked out branches of varying shapes and sizes.  They will get the chance to use their creative problem solving skills as figure out what to make with their painted branches when dry.

Other friends explored play dough, leafy branches and animals through imaginative play.

The building areas in our classroom were very busy as friends worked as a team to build complex play structures.  What a busy day of learning for Wee Friends!

During group we practiced yoga and deep breathing.  We read the story “Color Zoo” and tried to identify all of the shapes used to make the animal pictures.

Good afternoon!

This morning kids explored some new art materials like colored ribbon and origami paper.  We periodically introduce new materials to he art center with no particular project in mind.  This open ended approach allows kids to use their creative thinking and problem solving skills to make decisions on their own.  Today, several friends wanted to make collages all together.  Other days, projects may be different for every child.  We aim to allow kids the space and time and to explore materials freely, creating the opportunity for a deep and meaningful learning experience.

IMG_1621IMG_1623

Kids explored a variety of outdoor spaces as well.  We have introduced several water pumping stations to play spaces, allowing kids to add a water element to their imaginative play and stay cool at the same time.  Kids added water to the sandbox to make drip castles, and to the mud kitchen to make pasta or fight monsters depending on which friend was asked.  Kids also used water to help out in the garden, watering the vegetable plants.

Happy Monday!

The art table was buzzing with curiosity as children showed an interest in gluing, taping, and cutting. Older friends at the table were helpful to their younger peers as they got them tape when they asked for it and showed them how to appropriately use the loose materials that are offered. Cutting and gluing are foundational for early development. They build vital hand strength, bilateral coordination where we use both hands together, and hand eye coordination. These repetitive manipulative actions are necessary building blocks for everyday tasks like writing and fastening clothing.

IMG_0920IMG_0864

Two of our older friends spent time drawing tons of pictures and when they were done, they put the pictures on a clipboard and headed around the classroom asking friends what their favorite drawing was. They made tally marks on their paper to signify which drawing had the most votes!

IMG_0887IMG_0897IMG_0909

The welcome activity that was offered today was a loose part exploration where children used their imagination and fine motor skills to stack and build with colorful wood pieces. Charlotte took wooden rings and stacked as many as she could before her tower fell. She counted how many she had stacked before her tower ended up falling. Arthur used a collection of materials to build a cake! At the top of his cake, he placed a large marshmallow—creative!

IMG_0874IMG_0867IMG_0955

It looks like we’re in for another hot week so we utilized our shade and water space if children needed to cool down. A teacher also got the balls out for children to explore and kiddos spent time running, throwing, and kicking—all critical for gross motor development!

Happy Friday!

This morning we were busy climbing on a rainbow climber and crawling under our rainbow mats.

IMG_8991IMG_8992IMG_9012IMG_9002IMG_9013IMG_9014IMG_9015

Then we headed into the kitchen to paint.  A friend chose the paint colors today of blue, purple and yellow.  We then used 3 different size sponge brushed to paint with and mix new colors together on our papers.

IMG_9031IMG_9033IMG_9038IMG_9040

We then headed outside and looked out the the climbing house window, engaged with the sand in the sandbox, explored a water play activity where we got to pump the water ourselves, and rock the teeter totter.

Good Afternoon!

Today, kids explored making mono-prints in the art center.  They used their fingers to draw pictures in the paint.  Next, they used paper to lay over their picture and pull up the print.  It was so engaging for the first two kids that they both pulled prints for 30 minutes, filling the entire drying line with prints.  Our philosophy allows kids to explore an interest fully, as long as they are engaged, creating a deep, rich and evolving learning experience.  Kids only start to use their higher thinking skills when they have explored a material long enough to learn what they can do with it.  Kids begin to have creative ideas, they experiment, they grow their ability for sustained focused attention.  These are the learning experiences we always try to foster at Wee Friends.  We would rather just a few kids spend all morning at an activity than have everyone get a short turn.  The potential for those higher level thinking skills to engage and develop is too valuable.  We are always happy to offer an activity as many days as needed for everyone interested to explore it fully.

Good afternoon!

At the round table this morning, we offered a pairing/sorting/pattern making fine motor activity.  Kids looked through a jar of very sparkly clip-on costume earrings to find all of the pairs.  They clipped their pairs on a long piece of  shoe string.  Kids could also choose wood or white clothes pins for create long patterns on their string as well.  They practiced sorting, pairing like objects, pattern making/early math, fine motor and focused attention during this activity.

IMG_0671IMG_0639IMG_0652

Yesterday afternoon, some friends were interested in making wind chimes, so this morning we decided to set up an activity around that interest.  We added choices of beads, sticks and string to the art center.  Kids created strings of beads and sticks to create their wind chime art.  Some friends enjoyed sorting through letter beads to find their initials.  It was important to the group that their wind chime not get lost Smile.
