Happy Wednesday!

This morning we explored some touch and feel baby animal picture cards.  We talked about the sounds each of the animals made and felt the different fur textures of each of the baby animals.

Good afternoon!

Our friends engaged in dancing and following along to songs this morning. We started with “Sleeping Bunnies,” where our friends pretended to lay on the floor like bunnies that were sleeping. We then marched to “Ants Go Marching” with rhythm sticks.

IMG_0833(4)IMG_0840(4)IMG_0845(1)

We then made our way to the kitchen to practice our puzzle-solving skills. Every time a friend completed their puzzle, Miss Tina would give them a progressively complex puzzle. Our friends started with 3-piece or 9-piece puzzles and worked their way up to 15-piece or foam shape puzzles.

IMG_0837(4)IMG_0839(4)IMG_0863(4)IMG_0864(2)IMG_0867(4)

We brought down our soft blocks and Miss Bekah made an obstacle course for all of our friends to explore. We took turns going up on the blocks, going down the slide and then rolling our bodies on the cylinder block.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 kiddos came to the sign in board this morning where they were first asked to identify their name! Once they found their name, they observed the strip of paper next to their name. Each child looked at three different groups of shapes. The goal was to identify the group that had the most shapes. A few children simply looked at the groups and were able to identify which group had the most shapes while others counted each group, using their one to one correspondence skills. Once they found the group with the most shapes, they circled that group.

K.NS.9: Use correctly the words for comparison, including: one and many; none, some and all; more and less; most and least; and equal to, more than, and less than.

IMG_1822(4)IMG_1828(2)IMG_1831(4)

Later on in PREK1 group, we tackled the second text genre of the week: fairytales. Today, we read ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. We identified it as a fairytale immediately and made a list of characters or events within the story that makes it a fairytale.

K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).

Good Afternoon!

We began our morning engaged in a variety of activities.  We played in the cardboard boxes, sat on the reading step to engage in a book and walked around the classroom in dress-up shoes.

IMG_0753(4)IMG_0758(4)IMG_0763(4)IMG_0773(4)IMG_0769(4)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with loose part beads.  We worked on our color recognition skills, matching the colors of beads to our pattern card, stringing them onto our pipe cleaner and making a stack with them.

IMG_0777(4)IMG_0779(4)IMG_0783(4)IMG_0785(4)IMG_0787(4)

We then headed outside to enjoy the warmer temperatures and fresh air.  We were busy going down the slides, cooking in the housekeeping area, pushing the rocks with our bulldozer and working on our balancing skills on the balance beams.

Happy Monday!

**Reminder: the Pre-Conference Form (yellow paper) is due this Friday, February 7th.

To kick off a new week, we focused on identifying an item that didn’t belong in the group on our PREK1 sign in. On the board, several fruits were displayed as well as the color green. Children were able to identify that green didn’t belong because it wasn’t a fruit!

K.DA.1: Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, and other attributes. Identify objects that do not belong to a particular group and explain the reasoning used.

IMG_1710(5)IMG_1712(5)IMG_1711(3)

We’ll be diving into text genres this week in PREK1 group and today, we focused on the text genre ‘fiction’. Before we even started reading the book, we looked at the cover and I asked, “By looking at the cover, can you tell what type of book this may be?”. Our oldest friend raised her hand and said, “Fiction! Because carrots aren’t money!”. We identified several reasons why the book is a fiction story as we read it. We made a list on our chart of things that helped us realize that it was a fiction book.

K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).

IMG_1782(4)IMG_1783(5)

At our welcome activity this morning we sorted!  We chose how and what we wanted to sort.  Some sorted by color, others by shape and others by both!  We tried different sorting trays deciding which worked best for our chosen method.

IMG_1676(5)IMG_1702(4)IMG_1720(4)

IMG_1682(5)IMG_1666(6)

Our creative friends were interested in building three dimensional today both using carboard and paper.  Ryan made a “gigantic person” using cardboard and tape and Arthur made a “Helmet” using paper with tape.  As the kids have been exploring materials, they are starting to be able to plan what they are going to make and then pick a material that will best fit their idea rather than the other way around!  Leaps and bounds in creative problem solving!

IMG_1727(4)IMG_1725(4)IMG_1728(3)IMG_1730(3)IMG_1729(3)

PREK2: Today we read the story “Hush”.  We talked about how words that rhyme in our story, sound alike and create a rhythm like a song.  On our board today, we sorted our squares by color.  One of our friends suggested that we try sorting by shape tomorrow!

Breakfast– Whole wheat toast with peanut butter and fresh apples.

Lunch– Whole wheat pasta with shredded beef, fresh cantaloupe/clementines, and fresh cucumber/carrot.

PM snack– Whole milk yogurt with granola.

Wee Sprout– Fresh cucumber/carrot.

Have a lovely night!

*Reminder: Pre-Conference forms (yellow) are due next Friday, February 7th.

Happy Friday and last day of January!

This morning we engaged with a long rain stick that Miss Tina brought from her house.  We all worked on picking it up and turning it over to make the beads in it move from one end to another.  Some of us were able to do it independently and some of us needed help from a friend.

IMG_0667(4)IMG_0664(4)IMG_0670(3)IMG_0678(4)

We then headed into the kitchen to build with Magna-Tiles on the light table.  We enjoyed see the light filter through all the different colors.

IMG_0700(4)IMG_0704(4)IMG_0702(3)IMG_0711(4)IMG_0717(3)IMG_0721(4)IMG_0726(4)

We then made a path with our plastic blocks and the friends enjoyed crawling, sitting or walking down them.

We finished our week in PREK1 sign in by talking about the importance of illustrations in stories. Children were asked to match the authors words to the illustrations in one of the most popular children’s songs/books: the Itsy Bitsy Spider. We talked about how books wouldn’t make sense if the illustrations didn’t match the words. We also wrapped up our chart in group after reading ‘The Alphabet Adventure’ by adding the title, author, and illustrator to the chart.

K.RL.3.2: Define the role of the author and illustrator of a story in telling the story.

K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

IMG_1591(4)IMG_1588(3)IMG_1590(5)

An open ended activity was made available at the circle table this morning and children took it in all different directions—the imaginations were palpable!

Asher spaced his wooden manipulatives in a deliberate fashion, stating, “I’m making an obstacle course!”. A few other peers worked on balancing the blocks as majority of the blocks are oddly shaped sides. It took a lot of discipline and fine motor control to get the blocks to balance but we were patient and steady! Paige was quite excited when she was finally able to balance her five wooden blocks and not have them fall down.

Good afternoon!

We started off our morning by playing with the plastic blocks. Our friends turned them over to sit in them or to fill them up with our felt snowballs.

IMG_0584(4)IMG_0585(4)IMG_0586(4)

We then made our way to the kitchen to engage with a new sensory light table that Miss Tami bought for our classroom. We filled the tray with translucent sensory beads and green sensory tubes. Miss Tina changed the light color and would ask friends what the name of the new color was. Our friends scooped the beads with their hands, stacked the tubes into small towers and watched it pour out of their hands from above.

IMG_0592(4)IMG_0603(3)IMG_0597(4)IMG_0601(4)IMG_0609(4)IMG_0613(4)

We headed outside for another beautiful morning. Our friends helped shovel the snow, took turns going down the slide and engaging in the housekeeping area with one of our older siblings.

Good Afternoon!

As we have been painting lately, we have noticed, once again, there is a strong drive to use hands and fingers to paint.  Going with the flow of that interest lead to this activity.  We mixed paint with shaving cream to make it thick and fluffy!  Then we added one of each primary color to our new enormous Tuff tray and allowed friends to explore together.  As our kids painted, we used paper to pick up their finger marks as “monoprints”.

Good Afternoon!

**Reminder that the Conference Scheduling Form is due this Friday! Thanks!

Earlier in the week, we talked about the number of sides when dealing with a shape. Today, we focused on the number of vertices. Each child was able to find their name, identify their shape, and circle all of the vertices on their shape. Everyone was able to identify the vertices and count them!

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

IMG_1410(6)IMG_1404(5)IMG_1405(4)

This morning we explored ways to make two and three dimensional shapes.  We used match sticks and balls of clay to put shapes together in different ways, depending upon where we were developmentally.  Arthur built a triangular prism.  When I commented on his work, he corrected “no, this is a tent.”.

IMG_1383(4)IMG_1379(4)IMG_1381(4)

We spent much of the morning enjoying the snow and fresh air!  Albert was in the sandbox laughing to himself.  I asked what he found funny and he said he had found that all of the dragons where frozen in a block of ice.  I pulled the block out of the bin so he could look at it.  I asked him how long he thought it might take for the sun to melt the dragons free of the ice.  Albert replied “I’m doing an experiment!” .
