Happy Monday!
We kicked off our week in PREK1 group by starting to dive into groups and figuring out what item doesn’t fit into the group. There were four types of food on the sign in chart: three fruits and one vegetable. Children wrote their name under the vegetable as it didn’t fit well with the other three items. Of course, this led into a conversation about how some vegetables with seeds are technically considered fruit. It was a great and productive conversation between a few peers where they were able to state their thoughts!
Later on in group, we started talking about the four main text genres. Today, we read a book from the ‘fiction’ text genre. We read ‘Tops and Bottoms’. Even after the first sentence of the story, we knew it was a fiction story! We filled in a chart where we wrote the book we read today as well as the text genre that it belonged to!
K.DA.1: Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, and other attributes. Identify objects that do not belong to a particular group and explain the reasoning used.
K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).

This morning, we offered a sorting activity at the round table which encouraged friends to sort by color and shape. Kids looked through the tray of objects and picked out all of the items that matched the color of their tray. Further, some kids sorted the objects within their tray by shape. As kids worked, many of them realized they could build something with their objects. One friend made a “blue box” to put all of her blue things into. Another friend made a red playground for her red bears. Everyone had fun figuring out what they could make within this open ended activity.
