Happy Monday!

Several friends took turns at the playdough activity. At one point, the our children who were working with playdough decided they were going to open a restaurant that served pizza, cookies, and cake. Each friend had a job and was asked to make a specific item on the menu.

Good Afternoon!

We celebrated Bo turning 5 today! Happy birthday, Bo!

Majority of our day revolves around play-based learning. This is when children choose a play opportunity based on their interests. Teacher Tom does a fantastic job at offering an inside glimpse into play based learning, the questions surrounding it, and ultimately, how crucial it is to children’s development and learning. Teacher Tom states:

“When I see children on the floor, say, building with blocks, I know they are learning, because that’s what play is: it’s children setting about asking and answering their own questions. Can I stack this block atop that one? Can I make it even higher? Add a roof? Create a room? A zoo? Can I persuade this other person to join me in my vision? Can I join them in theirs? They aren’t saying these things aloud or even in their heads, but it’s quite clear that when humans play, when we freely choose an activity, that is what we are doing, testing the world, performing experiments, seeking answers to questions we ourselves pose.”

We offer various play experiences throughout the day that peak the interest of different children. Some children stay at an activity for 30 minutes while some stay at an activity for two hours. This is when learning happens—when children are invested in what they’re doing because it’s meaningful to them.

Towards the end of the blog post, Teacher Tom shares, “The great truth is that no one can ever know what another person is learning unless they directly tell us of their own accord: “Guess what I learned? . . .” And this is especially true of young children who likely don’t even have the vocabulary or experience to put their insights into words capable of communicating the depth and texture of their moments of Eureka!”.

So, at the end of the day, the question, “What did you learn today?” may not provide the information a parent is looking for. Instead, try asking, “Tell me about your day.” This allows children to share a story, rather than answer a question that usually elicits a short response.

“Play is our brain’s favorite way of learning.”

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged in reading books independently from the book shelf or listening to Miss Bekah read us some teacher books.  A couple of the teacher books we read focused on color mixing and rhyming.

A couple of friends then went over to build with the Duplos.  One of the friends shared she was building a house.

IMG_9311IMG_9319

A few of us then engaged with the shaker instruments.  We shook them to hear the sounds they made and make our own music.

IMG_9316IMG_9318IMG_9320

We then headed outside to engage riding the teeter totters, driving the construction truck and digging in the rocks, going down the slide, digging and riding the trucks in sandbox and watching a squirrel who was climbing up our tree.  What a fun-filled morning!

Good Afternoon!

We had quite the creative morning!

At the art easel, James completed several paintings. For his first painting, he used the paint brush end to make various animal foot prints! They all looked different and he put an animal to eat foot print type. The animals that he identified were squirrel, beaver, bird, and raccoon.

IMG_2473IMG_2483IMG_2480

Bo used the trio blocks to build his own robot named Olaf! He held it as high as he could and stated, “Wow! That’s tall!!”

IMG_2489IMG_2491

A pair of siblings occupied habitrail where they took wooden blocks and made specific creations throughout the space. P shared, “I made one that looks like a heart and one that looks like a bumblebee!”

IMG_2512

Friends scattered throughout the backyard, diving into activities that peaked their interest. James and a few peers were on the search for bugs while other friends found a space in the shade to explore. We have milkweed plants in the backyard and several red milkweed beetles were found. Once children had a few bugs in their bug jars, they searched the backyard for some good grass and weeds to place into the jars.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we started off our day in the housekeeping area.  We were busy cooking delicious food for us to eat and playing with baby dolls, covering them up to keep them warm with a blanket.

IMG_9261IMG_9260IMG_9270

We then headed into the kitchen to paint with a loofah.  We used blue, red and yellow paint to see what new colors we could make when we mixed another color into the first color we chose. We enjoyed filling our papers with a variety of colors.

IMG_9272IMG_9276IMG_9275IMG_9281IMG_9280

We then headed outside to engage in a variety of activities and get some fresh air.

Good Afternoon!

We began our day using our teddy bears and doing the motions to the Bear Hunt Song.

IMG_9203IMG_9200

Miss Bekah then switched out the sensory table from bird seed and rice to moon sand.  Miss Bekah showed us how we could use different scoops and make a mold out of them.  A friend later during her play asked Miss Bekah if she could make a mold with her scoop?  So she did!

IMG_9227IMG_9228IMG_9226

We then headed outside to get some fresh air. We used our big construction vehicles in the rock area to push and dump our rocks and  used a ramp from the Outlast block set to drive the small cars down.  We then got our bodies in motion and teetered on the teeter totter and worked on our balance skills on the balance beams.

IMG_9240IMG_9239IMG_9237IMG_9236IMG_9243IMG_9257

Breakfast:  Toasted whole grain wheat bread with butter and cinnamon/sugar mixture and fresh oranges.

Lunch:  Whole grain wheat pasta with butter and black beans, fresh cucumbers and apples.

Afternoon Snack:  Whole milk yogurt and graham crackers.
