Good Afternoon!

In K group, friends came up with verbs that we put on a web yesterday. We used those words today to create sentences! I went first and used my verb which was ‘climb’. I said, “I climb on the log house outside.”

Each friend got the chance to use their verb from yesterday in a sentence. After a few friends said their sentence, they said, “Hey! I created a nonfiction sentence because that really happened today!”

K.W.6.1b: Verbs–Writing sentences that include verbs.

During K sign in, children worked with three word families. Each word family had three words in it. The first letter of each word was missing so using their knowledge of letter sounds, they placed the correct letter into the blank spaces.

One word family was ten, pen, and hen. The t, p, and h were missing so children looked at the respective pictures and identified which letter was missing.

K.RF.3.5: Add, delete, or substitute sounds to change words.

PREK2 explored the same activity as K group. It challenged them and they were able to work together to place a few letters that completed the words.

Children were excited to continue working on their plant pots that they painted earlier in the week. Today, Miss Annastecia filled them with potting soil and gave each friend one snap pea seed!

They used a glass of water and a dropper to water their newly planted seed.

Good Afternoon.

Friends enjoyed the “new to them” train set brought up from storage today! These fun trains are large wooden trains that can hook together and have holed blocks placed on top of the train. They’re brightly colored and so much fun to engage with. Our baby friend Paige even enjoyed them. Smile

We then had more fun in the “new to us” sensory bin. This sensory bin replaced our corn and black beans with colorful rice. We still get all the scooping, pouring and sensory feel fun like before, just with something a little different. Smile

Last but not least, we said goodbye to our winter hats in the dramatic play center and said hello to our summer fun hats. What a GREAT day!!

Good morning!

After reading, ‘Good People Everywhere’ in K group,  we created a web with verbs. I started by sharing my example which was ‘climb’. We talked about action verbs and each friend got the opportunity to add one action verb to the web. The action verbs we came up with were climb, dance, move, skip, leap, dig, and run! Tomorrow for group, the next step we’ll take it taking these verbs on our web and using them in sentences.

K.W.6.1b: Verbs–Writing sentences that include verbs.

Our kindergarten friends used clothespins to pin the number that was missing from ten different number lines. For example, on one laminated sheet, the numbers 9, 10, and _____ were shown. Underneath, children had to chose from 8, 11, or 12 and pin the number that fits into the blank space.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

DSCN0077DSCN0083DSCN0088

In PREK2, children worked together to find the missing number in five different equations where the total was 10. Miss Kim drew pictures to show the number that fit into the missing spot.

DSCN0192DSCN0195

Miss Annastecia brought in some seeds from home and this morning, children had the chance to decorate their pot that they’ll use for the seeds. Friends spent quite a bit of time painting their pot using a variety of paint colors.

Happy Monday!

Reminder: Wee Friends is closed this upcoming Friday, March 26th.

During K group, we read ‘All the World’ which is a story from our MACK collection. Friends recognized that the author used rhyming words on each page. Once the story was finished, we moved our eyes to the white board where six different numbers were written.

Together as a group, we identified each number. There were twelve pieces of paper that had numbers of them. I held up one number at time and working together, we figured out where that number went. For example, I held up the number ‘9’. Children looked at the various numbers and came to the conclusion that the ‘9’ should go before the 10 on the first problem.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

DSCN0058

For kindergarten sign in, children used colored counters to find the missing number in five equations. Each equation had a total sum of 10 and they had to figure out the missing number. For example, one equation read ‘6 + _____ = 10’. A few friends decided to use their fingers too because since we have ten total fingers, it’s easy to do addition and subtraction using the number 10!

K.CA.4: Find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number for any number from 1 to 9 (e.g., by using objects or drawings), and record the answer with a drawing or an equation.

DSCN9971DSCN9968

Miss Kim created a special story for her PREK2 friends. There were various blank spaces that they had to fill in. Each friend got the chance to come up with a word or phrase that would make sense within the story.

DSCN0059

The rest of our day was full of various activities, both inside and outside! We were lucky enough to spend a ton of time outside this morning and later on in the afternoon. It was a great kick off to our week!

Happy Friday!

In K group, friends were able to come up with a sentence using a singular or plural noun that was given to them! Identifying a singular or plural noun in a sentence is something we do often but coming up with a brand new sentence when given a noun to use is challenging!

We have started to do a new thing during group. When we cross off the current day, we make a specific mark which creates diamonds when we cross enough days off. Today, Mack realized that we’re actually making rectangles too! A simple activity like this during calendar allows children to show their understanding of shapes too!

K.W.6.1a: Nouns/pronouns- Writing sentences that include singular and/or plural nouns (e.g., dog/dogs, cat/cats)

DSCN9912DSCN9911

During K sign in, children used their counting chart to count by 10’s. Once they were able to do that, they wrote down the numbers on their sign in. Everyone was able to count to 100 by 10’s—woo hoo!

K.NS.1: Count to at least 100 by ones and tens.

DSCN9866DSCN9867

Miss Kim took groups of friends out who explored a puff ball paint activity. They dipped the puff balls into paint and threw or dropped them on the canvas. Children were able to cover the canvas with various paint marks—they loved the process paint activity!

Good Afternoon and happy LAST day of Winter!!!

We are fortunate to have the OOEY GOOEY activity book by Lisa Murphy to help us plan some fun and exciting art activities.

Today we had a very fun and exciting time engaging in Drip Drop Prints. This activity can be a sensory, science, and hand-eye coordination skilled activity to have fun with and we had more than fun, we had a blast!

Place a sheet of wax or parchment paper with each friend and allow them to drip-drop the paint onto the paper with small droppers and then that water will bead up. The place a paper towel or a coffee filter on top of the beads and lift up. Waalahhh… a beautiful creation!

Good Afternoon!

I stumbled across a Teacher Tom blog post today and several parts within the post struck a cord. We implemented our new MACK (Mindful Attention with Curiosity and Kindness Curriculum) curriculum two years ago. We use a variety of techniques, resources, and literature to help us attend to the emotional and social development of children. While it’s stuff we’ve ‘always done’, it’s a wonderful way to pinpoint various topics each week.

This week, our MACK is: Children will learn everyone has a gift they give to the world and even small children can contribute. Children will be able to name gifts they contribute to our community.

Children show mindfulness in many ways throughout the day: kindergarteners problem solving with younger peers without being asked or doing an individual activity that requires focus even though the environment can be on the louder side.

Teacher Tom shared, “I see it being practiced wherever there are young children engaged in self-selected activities. A child bent over a puzzle in the midst of a noisy classroom is not just working a puzzle, she is the puzzle. Children negotiating their way through their games of princesses and super heroes are fully there in the moment, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. And the younger the children are, the more mindful they tend to be: a baby staring off into the middle distance is, in that moment, the entire universe.”

We as teachers try to set a mindful example. I’ll set the stage of an example. A five year old is building the most creative structure using building materials. Teacher Tom states, “We insert ourselves, uninvited, into their play with our ideas and concerns and scaffolding and witticisms, drawing their attention away from the present moment, often in a jarring manner.” I can definitely say I’m guilty of this! But, if I were to switch to a more mindful state, I would take a step back and watch while waiting to see if the child approaches me to share their creation instead of interrupting their play which usually is more for my benefit than theirs.

Hope you enjoy this short article as much as I did!
