Happy Thursday!

Throughout this past week, the six kindergarteners have been exploring addition and subtraction problems.

This morning for K sign in, children listened to three word problems. They had to write out the equation and figure out the answer. We chatted about the difference between addition and subtraction. Most times, children were able to listen to the word problem and the wheels were already turning trying to figure out the answer!

K.CA.1-2: Solve real world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5=2+3 and 5=4+1)

Later on in K group, children were given a number on a piece of paper. I read aloud the first equation and the child who had the answer (which was 8), raised their hand! We tapped the 8 after the equal sign. We went through every equation until the numbers were all gone!

We spent a little time talking about adding or subtracting 0 and what that means.

In PREK2 group, children worked with plastic eggs that had random addition problems written on them. They looked at the equation and placed it on the total that they thought it was. They used yellow and blue beads to represent both numbers of the equation. When they figured out the total of the equation, they checked to see if their educated guess was right!

Miss Kim welcomed children to the island where they helped make homemade apple oatmeal treats for our afternoon snack! Everyone who joined was anxious to pitch in and loved helping.

The end result was SUPER good and we (teachers included) all enjoyed a special snack.

Happy April Fool’s Day! A parent said it best, the snow was “Mother nature’s joke” for us today.

Today we engaged in several activities in the kitchen.  Some friends engaged their fine motor,  hand-eye coordination, and problem solving skills to work on completing multiple puzzles at the table. We also had the sensory table available for friends to enjoy scooping and pouring the rice.

Since it was a cold and snowy day, we added a tunnel and our water sensory mats to give us something different in our gross motor area.  Our friends loved them!

Good Afternoon!

After we read, ‘Dinosaur Stomp’ in K group, we worked together to solve four word problems. Before we dove into the word problems, we talked about the difference between subtraction and addition. After I read it, they told me the numbers to write AND the answer! Some children used their fingers but some were able to do the problem in their head!

K.CA.1-2: Solve real world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5=2+3 and 5=4+1)

In PREK2, children worked with addition problems using bears as a manipulative. The total for every equation was 10. Friends got a turn to work with the bears and figure out what combinations equal 10 (6 and 4, 5 and 5, etc.)

We had another busy, engaging morning! Two of our favorite activities lately are the colored counter and trio blocks. Franklin wasn’t even on the building rug for five minutes before he had his creation built!

Evie and several peers took the colored counters and placed them in a specific way all around the circle table. When a teacher inquired about what they were doing, Evie shared, “We’re having a birthday party for the bears!”

Good Afternoon!

Evie and a few peers were exploring with the colorful bears this morning. They made a choo choo train on the lazy susan and sang a song to go along with it! When they were done, they placed the colorful counters into the bin by color—like a rainbow!

DSCN0526DSCN0553

The rest of our morning was non-stop: children finding activities and diving into them with their peers. Franklin used the trio blocks and wooden sticks for an impressive creation! He was so excited about it that he gathered his friends around to see it.

One of our kindergarteners loves investing and learning about dinosaurs. Miss Kim brought one of his favorite dinosaur books outside and together, they measured how long a dinosaur would be in real life!

Miss Kim took measuring tape and F would stand to mark the measurement. They measured four or five dinosaurs—the T Rex took up almost the whole backyard!

After they measured a shorter dinosaur, Miss Kim had F measure the dinosaur by his body lengths! The dinosaur was the length of five and half of F’s body!

Since temperatures are going to be dropping the next few days, we took advantage of the weather today by spending as much outside time as we could. There were times of loud, rambunctious running while there were moments of quite, meaningful play experiences. It was the perfect mixture!

Good Afternoon!

Today we used dot marker paints to decorate the cardboard box. We used a variety of bright colors on it.  One friend shared he was drawing an elephant with his dot marker paints.

Good Afternoon!

Reminder:  Wee Friends will be closed on Friday, April 2 for observance of Good Friday.

We had a big box delivered to Wee Friends.  We were able to open the big box and see what was inside.  We took out all the contents before finding the bubble wrap.  We enjoyed squeezing it with our hands and stomping on it with our feet to POP the big bubble. After popping the bubble wrap, we crawled through the box before it became flat and we turned it into a dance floor.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged in one of our favorite sensory experiences….Green Playdough!  Friends used a hammer or rolling pin to make their playdough flatter so they could use their cookie cutters to make cars, dinosaurs, motorcycles and stars.  We had a blast.
