Good Afternoon!

This morning friends were laying on the carpet and asked Miss Annastecia to sing the See The Bunnies Sleeping Song for them to act out.

Miss Annastecia had an exciting painting activity for us using cardboard tubes and a marble.  We each placed our marble into the tube and watched it come out the end into the paint on the paper at the bottom.  Miss Annastecia asked Nesta, who was the first friend to do the activity, what she thought would happen when her marble went into the paint?  Nesta replied, “it will spread it around.”

Our 2 youngest friends engaged with the bean bags.  They were busy shaking them, placing them on the slide and working to toss them into the basket.

Happy Wednesday!

I’m going to be honest. This article is on the longer side but it is a GOOD one. People often underestimate the playful nature that children have. We spend a great deal of time in free play, offering several activities and areas for children to dive into. It’s here that children get to experiment socially, learn how to deal with conflict, and figure out HOW to play with peers.

For example, a group of peers spent the entire time in our outdoor housekeeping area this morning. They used things from throughout the yard in their play—mulch, grass, weeds, helicopter seeds, etc. For almost two hours, they kept extending their play, staying interested and self driven by coming up with new tasks to do.

In this blog post below, Teacher Tom goes into great detail about a child who was in his class:

“When I asked this father why they had left the girl’s mother and older siblings to come so far just for four two-and-a-half hour sessions a week, he told me he was worried about Anjoli. “She doesn’t know how to play.” All of his children had attended school from the earliest age possible, schools that promised academic achievement, but he had recently seen the error of his ways. He told me that he felt it was too late for his sons, but he hoped that it wasn’t for Anjoli.”

“It all seemed both heartbreaking and bizarre to me, but the father was sincere. I’d never met a child who didn’t know how to play. Maybe, I thought, this father simply didn’t know what play looked like. Indeed, I started our first day together on the playground with the theory that it was the father, not the girl, who didn’t know about play.”

Teacher Tom does a fantastic job at sharing this story—I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Good Afternoon!

This morning a friend asked to play with the bells.  We engaged in shaking them while singing, If Your Happy and You Know It.  We then shook each of the different bells we had to see what kind of sound each one made; a softer sound or louder sound.

A friend decided to place both of the rainbow mats in front of the habitrail ladder.  We then used those as a tunnel to crawl through to make our way under the habitrail to crawl over the star stairs and slide mat.

I found a quote by Albert Camus that I feel fits perfectly with these pictures… “Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead.  Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow.  Just walk beside me and be my friend.”

Good Afternoon!

This morning, our day began by using our gross motor muscles while climbing and crawling on the habitrail before sliding down the slide.

While looking for the trash truck that we see on Mondays, we saw a different truck with a bucket.  Friends were very excited to see it parked on our side of the street. We unfortunately did not see any workers working nearby.

We added something new and exciting to our sensory bin today…Moon Sand!  Friends used shovels, measuring spoons and cups to scoop the moon sand.  We noticed how it looks different and has a different feel/texture than regular sand.  We also found out we could make the mold of the cup the same way as when we make sand castles with the sand outside when it is wet.  We then added some of our rubber water animals for friends to be able to bury in the sand and then find them again.  We had a blast!

Happy Monday!

This week’s focus will be on calendars: why we use them, what we can find on a calendar, and the terms that we use.

For sign in, children answered the question: ‘Why do we use a calendar?’

We continued this conversation into K group as we read, ‘A Child’s Calendar’ which focuses on the twelve months of the year. On each page, one month is the focus. Illustrations and words tell what the month is filled with. For example, in July, fireworks and celebrating America were the main event!

Social Studies: K.1.5 Explain that calendars are used to represent days of the week and months of the year.

In PREK2, children read and chatted about cicadas! They identified the life cycle of a cicada and dove into each stage a little bit.

Children got their sensory fix this morning in the sandbox! Right as we headed outside, the sandbox immediately became full of friends chatting with one another about what to make. My personal favorite? Sand ice cream!

There were several children who were hunting for bugs. Using a bug jar, they placed the bugs into the jar. Millie and James quickly realized that the bugs needed food so they went around the yard looking for weeds for their bugs to eat. Not only did they keep their bugs fed but our yard now has much less weeds Smile.
