Good Afternoon!

An art activity was made available this morning that used a variety of supplies including paint, paper, droppers, glue, cotton balls, and straws.

Children started by using the paint dropper to add paint to any area of their paper that they’d like—this represented the rain. Then, if they chose, they could add clouds which is where the cotton balls came into play! Our favorite part? Using the straw to move the paint around on the paper and cotton balls: our breath is powerful!

As we headed outside, we saw that the wee wee’s had gotten out chalk which we decided to utilize! A few older friends started off by playing tic tac toe but they had to change the board and the rules since there were three players that were involved. Then, they decided to draw with the chalk on the sidewalk. Penny drew a house while another friend made a hop scotch board all the way up to 15!

Even though chalk is an extremely well known tool that children use, extending play with chalk is really easy!

For example: (all dependent upon readiness and ability!)

Have your child draw a hopscotch board and go up to a given number. This allows children the opportunity to write numbers.

Draw three squares or rectangles and in each space, write words that rhyme. If your child is still working on rhyming words, write a word in the first space and they can come up with two rhyming words for the open spaces.

Make a chalk ladder and in each space, write an equation (8+2 for example) and when your child jumps on that space, they need to verbally say the answer.

Good afternoon.

This morning two of our toddler friends went on a wagon ride with Miss Bekah.

They saw dogs, big trucks and some people doing construction on their home with a loud saw. They were hoping to see a train as they walked by the railroad tracks, but none came through.

We had a GREAT walk/ride! Smile

Happy Monday!

Franklin and Daniel showed interest in exploring the yoga pose book that’s up in the science area that we use for K/PREK1 group. Franklin took the lead and chose different poses to do and friends quickly joined in! While they were in the pose, Franklin had friends practice deep breathing. Not only does yoga help calm our bodies and offers us a chance to work on our breathing but it increases our stability and focus.

We spent quite a lot of time outside this morning, exploring the outdoor environment while searching for bugs! Other friends sat in the sandbox, making tunnels using shovels and their hands.

Good Afternoon!

The circle table is where friends come together to do a puzzle or play a game like ‘Go Fish’—this morning it was very busy with friends moving to and from the table. Cooperative play is the last stage of play that children in early education go through. What does cooperative play look like?

Franklin and Jack decided to get out Go Fish. Franklin has been playing this game quite a lot so he asked Jack if he’d like to join him. They worked together, talking through the rules and each step of the game. They were completely involved in the game, each putting in effort towards the end.

In a multi-age classroom, with friends ranging in ages from two and a half to six years old,  a few different play stages are present. A two year old plays very differently than their six year old peer. But, one of the many benefits of a multi-age classroom is that these age groups learn from each other. We often see a five or six year old play with a younger friend, taking them under their wing.

I’ve attached a quick article that lays out the many stages of play as well as the ages that may be associated with these stages!
