Happy Monday!
In K/PREK1, we read, ‘The Little Penguin’ which focuses on a penguin being born and the physical transformation that the penguin goes through before becoming an adult emperor. A little while after the penguin was born, it started losing its feathers just to come to the realization that he was losing feathers but also growing new, adult feathers! N quickly raised her hand and found a connection between humans and penguins. She shared, “It’s kind of like when we lose our baby teeth. We lose them but then we get adult teeth!”
This week, we’re going to be focusing on the creation of stories and the important roles that people play such as author and illustrator. Last week, we identified 2-D and 3-D shapes and this week, we’re diving deeper into shapes, looking at specific characteristics such as number of sides and number of vertices.
Before children rolled up their mat, I asked each friend to point to a given shape with a specific number of sides. For example, I asked David to point to a shape with four sides. He came to the board and pointed to the rectangle, identifying which shape he pointed to.
K.RL.3.2: Define the role of the author and illustrator of a story in telling the story.
K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g., number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

Our goal during journal time is to hear the phrase, “I don’t need help. I can do this.”
That’s what I heard today as Grady was getting ready to write his description. He looked at me and said, “Miss Mindy, I can do this by myself.”
Children’s confidence grows every time they kid spell or work with letters and sounds in any given capacity. We may not have direct lessons geared toward letters and the sounds that they make but children are giving a 10-15 minute window of time to journal where what they’re working on is important to them. They aren’t told what to draw or what to write so it means something to them. This is where the most learning takes place. Children soak up letters and sounds when surrounded by their peers which ultimately creates an environment where children are learning from each other.

Penny has shown interest lately in blood and how it moves throughout the body. Miss Kim set up a science experiment using two cups, a balloon, and straws to mimic how blood moves. Children also got to see what a stethoscope looks like and what it’s used for.

We were able to head outside this morning! We were ready for the snow and fresh air—between laughter, snow ball creations, and ingesting snow or “ice cream” as some friends called it, we had a very productive time shedding some of our winter energy!
