Happy Friday!

**Reminder: The ‘Pre-Conference Form’ (yellow) is due next Friday, February 7th. Thank you!

Our Friday consisted of:

Conversations centered around authors and illustrators and the importance they play in the creation of stories. A friend in K/PREK1 shared, “I think that the author writes the words first so the illustrator knows what to draw.”

Children of various ages journaling throughout the day. The open concept of journaling appeals to all of our friends because what they journal about it important and meaningful to them.

Good Afternoon!

In K/PREK1, we read ‘How Are You Peeling’ which is a book from our MACK selection! It is a booking focused on feelings but using fruits and vegetables. The illustrations in the story weren’t drawings but pictures so we talked about the word ‘photographer’.

K.RL.3.2: Define the role of the author and illustrator of a story in telling the story.

K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

In PREK2, children each got to bring a toy to group from the environment. Miss Kim used the toys as focal points in the story. Once the story was read, each friend got to illustrate a page.

While we offer more guided art experiences where teachers put out materials for children to explore, lately, our older friends have been using the art area as the ultimate imagination portal.

Today, Grady drew ‘Peter Parker’. Once he was done, he created a Spiderman mask for Peter. Several friends followed this idea as various versions of Spiderman masks were created. Art materials are offered but it’s children’s imaginations and initiative that create these meaningful art experiences.

Good Afternoon!

We read, ‘When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry’ in K/PREK1 group which is a story about Sophie who shares her journey of what she does when she becomes angry. Before we started reading, I asked friends to share with me their thoughts on the front cover. It simply shows Sophie’s stern, angry face. Even though it was a simply cover, it elicited thoughts about what may have made Sophie angry.

Sophie becomes angry with her younger sister and mom and storms out of the house, heading out into nature where she was able to switch her mindset. She became calm, appreciating the noises around her. When she got home, she walked through the door and noticed the lovely smell that lofted through the air BUT we were never told where the smell came from. Several friends asked, “But where did the smell come from?”

I made the comment, “In stories like this where we may not get all of the answers we want, we can use our imagination to fill in the blanks.”

Everyone’s background and previous experiences are unique to them so when I asked what their favorite smell was, various responses were shared. Our favorite smells ranged from ‘pancakes and bacon on Sunday morning’ to ‘dirt’ to ‘macaroni and cheese’.

Art= process not product

“…the basic law of children’s creativity is that it’s value lies not in it’s results, not in the product of the creation but in the process itself.”

Good Afternoon.

This morning we happily engaged in getting our bodies in motion with various movement songs.

We tip-toed, hopped and skated as well as other movement actions. We listened closely  to the what the song narrator was telling us to do with our bodies and our feet and acted out that simple direction. We had so much fun. Smile
