Happy Friday! I hope you all have had a GREAT week.

Today was a great day to read! We have so many fun and exciting books to choose from it can sometimes be hard to choose just one. When that happens, we can just sit and read for a long time. We LOVE to read.

We then headed into the kitchen area and painted more wooden snowflakes.

This time we first painted the snowflakes with glue and then we placed them into a bowl full of glitter and moved them all around so the snowflake would be coated with the beautiful glittery substance.

Good Afternoon.

This morning friends were eagerly awaiting to paint their wooden snowflakes that we will soon hang around the classroom as we gear up for our wintery months ahead.

We used glitter plaint and they were all so excited to see the sparkles in their paint. Smile

Good Afternoon!

“Education is not limited to the classroom. It takes place in the kitchen, on the corner, as you walk, when you listen, and in the silence.”

Good Afternoon!

I’m not going to lie..this is a longer article but SO worth the read. Tami posted it on our Wee Friends Facebook page and I just got around to reading it!

In the article, the author, Peter Gray, Ph.D., makes the statement, “I don’t want to trivialize the roles of adults in children’s lives, but, truth be told, we adults greatly exaggerate our roles in our theories and beliefs about how children develop.”

Children learn from each other. Yes, we are here to help facilitate encounters where children can play happily but really, children learn from one another. Especially in a multi age class where children are at varying levels in their development, we see this on a daily basis. The play level of younger children is brought up higher by playing with their older peers while our older friends are given the opportunity to lead and to teach.

In most instances, three year old’s may not be fully ready to play with their five year old peers: “Little children communicate with one another largely in the context of play, and the communications have real meaning. They negotiate about what and how to play. They discuss the rules.”. Three year old’s are not quite ready for the rules of play as they are in between parallel play and associate play. When children hit that 4-5 age range, they start following the ‘rules’ of play, having conversations about how to set up their play experience, also known as cooperative play.

“Certainly we are important in children’s lives.  Children need us.  We feed, clothe, shelter, and comfort them.  We provide examples (not always so good) of what it’s like to be an adult.  But we don’t raise, socialize, or educate them.  They do all that for themselves, and in that process they are far more likely to look to other children than to us adults as models.  If child psychologists were actually CHILD psychologists (children), theories of child development would be much less about parents and much more about peers.”

Good Afternoon.

We have really been loving building with the colorful magna-tiles lately.

This activity enhances our imaginations, hand-eye coordination, fine motor and shape/color recognition skills.  These tiles are the best and we can build so many neat things with them. We also like to have them come crashing down to make a loud sound and land in all different ways.

Good Afternoon!

Today we began our morning reading many teacher books.  Our friends are really enjoying our winter and Christmas books.  After having a teacher read them to us for quite a while, we sat carefully looking at the teacher books ourselves.  We did a great job turning the pages carefully since they are made of paper.

We then headed to the block area to use our creative building skills to build with the Magnatiles.

PB180302PB180310

We were also able to enjoy some outside time this morning.  We were busy using our gross motor muscles running around the backyard to be safe from the “big kid bears” that were chasing us.

Happy Friday!

What an end to our week! We had to pleasure of having the Good Shepherd Montessori School Xylophone Group play a few songs for us this morning! We were all entranced as we listened to them play—Franklin asked after they left, “Can they come back again?”

Tami was able to take a video of their last song and post it to the Wee Friends Facebook page—take a look at it! I’m sure our friends would love to watch the video back with you and share their thoughts!

A big thank you to Good Shepherd Montessori School Xylophone Group for allowing us to be your audience!

This morning friends were very excited for two reasons in particular.
