Good Afternoon and Happy Friday.

This afternoon we say a very sad goodbye to our friend Daniel, BUT…. thankfully he’s just going next door as he has graduated the Infant/Toddler classroom and is making his way into the pre-school classroom. Smile

Just look at this wonderful climbing our friends are engaged in!!

This is a GREAT gross motor activity but also enhances our friends courage/bravery skills. It can be a little scary climbing up to the very tip top of the Cottage Climber, but we GOT THIS. Smile

Hello!

*Just as a reminder, please make sure that your child’s fall paperwork is filled out and return by tomorrow. Thank you!

Another Teacher Tom blog post that attracted my attention (thanks to Tami’s post on Facebook earlier today!). What I love about Teacher Tom is that he doesn’t claim to be an expert. He simply shares his ideas and thoughts based on several years of experience with children.

Rewards and punishments may appear to work in the moment — the promise of ice cream may well motivate a child to eat a few peas; the threat of having toys taken away may well motivate a child to tidy up — but human nature dictates that, being unnatural consequences, the value of the rewards and the severity of the punishments must be regularly increased or they lose their effectiveness. Not only that, but the lessons taught in the long run, to be motivated by the approval or disapproval of others, are certainly not what we wish for our children. Values must come from within; they are not imposed from without: that’s called obedience an unsavory and even dangerous trait.”

Rewards and punishments. It’s always going to be a topic of conversation amongst parents and educators. When we want a child to do something (clean up for example), we want them to do it without complaining and in a timely fashion. This almost NEVER happens. Children don’t like to switch from one activity to the next ESPECIALLY if they’re enjoying themselves. Rewarding them by saying, “If you clean up, you can have ice cream after dinner”, is extrinsically motivating them. Instead, we should be offering an opportunity where they are intrinsically motivated. For instance, saying, “If you clean up your room, you’ll be able to take pride in the fact that your toys are put away nicely which shows that you respect them!”—yes ice cream sounds SO much better but it doesn’t last. We want children to be proud of the choices they make as well as the people they are becoming and what they’re starting to value.

“If you value healthy food, then eat it. If you value being well rested, then sleep. If you value a tidy bedroom, then keep yours tidy. And ultimately, with time, sometimes lots of time, it will be your role-modeling of these behaviors that your child will come to imitate, not on your schedule, but one of his own, which is all we can expect of our fellow humans.”

Good Afternoon.

We have had a very busy week with new friends coming into the classroom for their transition visits as well as one of our current Wee Wee’ers going to the preschool classroom for his transitioning visits.

Fall brings so many changes and we are all very excited to bring in those changes and have a great rest of our year!

Today, we used our rhythm sticks and bean bags to listen and move along to Hap Palmer’s music (in motion.) These movement songs are filled with different ways to keep our bodies in motion and engage in simple ways to follow directions. We had a GREAT time.

Ellie found another way to get her body in motion as well. She had fun crawling under the habi-trail area and walking on the water squares.

A group of friends came together this morning to build a structure out of wooden blocks. What did they build you ask? A Christmas tree with presents underneath. Of course, holiday music was requested as the cherry on top.

We tried to explain that it’s only August but that’s the wonderful thing about imaginations: anything goes! Smile

Anna and her family donated new dress up clothes! Anna helped me take some of our current housekeeping clothes downstairs so that we had space for the new ones!

Our new dress up clothes opened up a whole new world: vet world to be exact! Children used the tools and animals in housekeeping to practice their veterinarian skills.

Good Afternoon and Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.

“You can discover more about a person from an hour of play than a year of conversation.” ~Plato

We added in a new fine motor activity into the classroom today and the kids LOVED it. A wire whisk was stuffed with soft puff balls and our friends worked the fingers and hands into the whisk to get the balls out.

Once all the puff balls were dislodged, of course we just had to throw them at one another to add in even more fun. Smile

During our outdoor play, the water table was a big hit. (As always)  We engaged in all the fun water animals and had them swimming in the pans of water.

This activity enhances our fine motor, hand-eye coordination and sensory skills.

Happy Friday!

**Please check out the lost and found cubby in the science area at pickup time as we have several unclaimed items! Thank you!

We welcomed David back this morning as he’s been gone all summer. Kim, Annastecia, and I just hung back and watched as he reconnected with his peers. Several friends have been asking when their friends (who have been gone for the summer) are coming back. The bonds and friendships that these children make is absolutely incredible. David’s relationships with his peers got right back on track.

The summer time can offer relaxed schedules and a lower class size.

We’re excited to have a full class and start the school year in just a few short weeks!
