Happy First Day of April!

After reading, ‘Olivia Acts Out’ in K/PREK1, we solved story problems using pictures as manipulatives. Lucy’s story problem read: “Lucy was having a birthday party. She invited 10 friends, but she only had 3 cupcakes. How many more cupcakes does Lucy need so that every friend gets a cupcake?” Lucy took three cupcake pictures and placed them in front of her. She kept adding cupcakes until she got to 10 cupcakes. “I need 7 more!”, she determined. She took the dry erase marker and wrote a 7 to complete the problem! Each friend took a turn solving their own story problem.

K.CA.1-2: Solve real-world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5=3+2 and 5=4+1)

PREK2 friends answered the question: “If I came to a magical rainbow, I would…”, which allowed children to use their imagination. We had quite the range of answers: gold, trash truck, and unicorns! Our personalities were on display!

Good Afternoon and Happy April.

“By being yourself, you put something wonderful in the world that was not there before.” ~ Edwin Elliot

PLEASE NOTE: Wee Friends will be closed Friday, April 19th in observance of Good Friday

Today during our sensory/fine motor activity we used pastel colors to paint Easter eggs to hang around the classroom. We used the colors  pink, yellow, purple, and blue. We had such a fun time, as painting is always a hit!

Miss Rebekah showed friends just how we make a pastel or lighter color paints from our more bold colors. Our little ones thought it was an intriguing process.

Daniel and Jack were very excited when we went outside and they both found large chunks of ice! Daniel asked, “Why is there ice?” Miss Marty explained to him that when it rains and get very cold, the rain will turn into ice. Daniel’s response was short and sweet… “OH!” Smile

Happy Friday!

Instead of reading a book for K/PREK1 group, we read three new poems. After each poem, I asked the question, “How did that make you feel or what did it make you think of?”. Each poem had a different topic, length, and feel. We talked about feelings and emotions. Words have great power over us. One of the poems was about a dog so this brought up the topic of friends wanting dogs/cats or losing a family pet. Another poem centered around being thankful that our nose was on our face..and not in between our toes. This specific poem made us feel SILLY!

PREK2 friends played with letters and their sounds. Each friend rolled a letter die and rolled a specific letter. They wrote that letter in the blank space, creating a new word. For example, Ruby started with the word ‘food’. When she rolled the die, she rolled an ‘M’ so she wrote it into the blank space. This created a new word: ‘mood’!

Pattern blocks were a hit this morning as we used our imaginations to make the following: a man lifting weights, a bird, and a rock!

This activity had no rules; it was completely open ended. There was no right or wrong; just what our friends felt like creating!

Good Afternoon and Happy Friday!

“In Play: children learn about friendships and how to negotiate with others in social situations.” ~Pinterest.com

What a fabulous week we have had. We have been outside the majority of the week both in the morning and the afternoon. Smile I think we may be able to say… Spring has Sprung!!!

With that being said, I think it’s safe to say we can take our winter gear home! If your child has snow pants, boots, etc. please take them home and lets happily retire them until next winter. Smile

We had plenty of ball action today while playing outside. This activity enhances our gross motor and hand-eye coordination skills as well as working together with our friends if we are playing catch with them.

Good Afternoon!

In K/PREK1, we read a fiction story we checked out at the library. We dissected one of the crudest characters of all time: Cruella de Vil. Friends kept asking, “Why is she so mean?!”. We talked about choices that Cruella was making and how they thought that made other people feel.

Afterwards, we dove into word families. We started with five words: got, rat, ran, king, and bin. We went through each word and sorted them based on similarities between the words. A few friends commented, “These words all rhyme!”. After we sorted all of the words, Lucy asked, “So which group had the most?”. We counted each group and came to the conclusion that each group had four words. “Oh! So they’re equal!”, Lucy shared.

In PREK2, the focus was fairytales. Miss Kim read a story and each friend got to come up with a word (verb) to fill in the blank within the story. As a group, we talked about fairytales and certain characteristics that fairytales have.

One of the benefits of being 4 and 5 years old is the ability to make up a game. Our friends LOVE making up games but also making up rules in their game. We often hear, “It’s my game and I made up the rules.” This is the definition of power at this age. Majority of the time, children have their own idea of what character they want to be or what animal they want to portray. They may not want to be the dad but the brother instead. Giving children words and phrases to work through these problems is vital to their social development.

I found this Teacher Tom post and it made me chuckle because it is so true. More so, it still happens in adulthood!

So happy Thursday! Hopefully this provides a midday laugh!

Happy Sunny Wednesday!!!

“Children teach us to wonder, to be surprised, to accept possibility; to continue to believe that we can be better, that democracy is possible, that peace is possible. ~Carla Rinaldi

Today Miss Rebekah introduced a new and exciting sensory/fine motor activity to our friends and they absolutely LOVED it!!

We first colored with markers onto a blank white piece of paper, and then brush painted over our marker creations with water. This then made a bleeding affect and we even “accidently” made some holes onto our creations as well. We all had a great time and a fun, new experience.

When playing outside today, we all worked together on making sand castles. Friends worked very well together and nicely used their words to let others know exactly what was wanted and needed to make the castles. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!!

Good Afternoon!

A look into our day:

K/PREK1 embarked on our first library trip of the season. The Mishawaka library completed moved their children’s section so it was brand new to us! Right when we walked in, we noticed that they had two specific parts: nonfiction and fiction. Lucy was quick to share with her friends what that meant. We took our time looking for books that peaked our interest. A few friends had certain authors they wanted to look for so we looked for those books using the first letter of the authors last name.

We’ve been working on an art project this week that has multiple steps. This morning, children continued working on their project, adding detail and using scissors along the way.

As we headed outside, the shining sun hit us right on our faces. It continued to warm up as friends scattered throughout the backyard environment.

Good Afternoon!

In K/PREK1, we read, ‘Just The Way You Are’. The book is centered around appreciating the differences between each other. When we finished the book, we talked about the differences between us. Friends brought up these differences: eye color, hair color, feet, and finger prints. It’s natural to want what friends have or have a characteristic that they do but it’s important at this age for children to love who they are and what makes them special. Verbal affirmation is something we model as much as possible whether it’s commenting about a kind choice a friend made or effort that was put forth at our journal time.

This lead into how we ended group. As each friend was rolling up their mat, they got the opportunity to say a positive affirmation about a peer.

Before we completed our affirmations, we used trio blocks to help us solve addition problems. Lucy helped me demonstrate this as she had just did something similar in her kindergarten sign in. For the first example, Lucy put together a string of 6 trio blocks. Our goal was to get to 10 blocks. She kept adding blocks until she got to 10. It took her 4 more blocks to get to 10 so Lucy wrote a 4 in the blank space. Each friend completed an equation and if they were unsure of how to write the number, I scaffolded this by dotting the number for them so they could trace it.

K.CA.4: Find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number for any number from 1 to 9 (e.g., by using objects or drawings), and record the answer with a drawing or an equation.

DSCN1456DSCN1457

In PREK2, children used animals so solve subtraction problems. For example, Ruby rolled a 6. She gathered a group of 6 animals. She rolled the dice again and rolled a 2. So she took two animals away, giving her 4 animals!

DSCN1443DSCN1448

Tami posted this article to our Facebook page this morning and we loved the content. We’re always focused on modeling certain behaviors that we want to see from our Wee friends. Adults can’t make kids be kind. Adults can’t make kids eat healthy foods. However, we can model these things. As teachers, we can talk kindly to one another, compliment each other, and appreciate the differences and similarities we share.

Rewards and punishments may appear to work in the moment — the promise of ice cream may well motivate a child to eat a few peas; the threat of having toys taken away may well motivate a child to tidy up — but human nature dictates that, being unnatural consequences, the value of the rewards and the severity of the punishments must be regularly increased or they lose their effectiveness. Not only that, but the lessons taught in the long run, to be motivated by the approval or disapproval of others, are certainly not what we wish for our children. Values must come from within; they are not imposed from without: that’s called obedience an unsavory and even dangerous trait.”

Friendship!!! What a wonderful sight, what a wonderful feeling, what a wonderful act of love and compassion. Our friends have such strong bonds and it makes our classroom such a happy place to be in every day. Smile

Evie was working on the number puzzle and was having a little trouble. But have no fear, Jack came to help her out right away. The two engaged in the puzzle working as a team to get it finished, making conversation the entire time.  Social-emotional/friendship bonds are priceless!!!
