Good afternoon!

Our friends explored Magna-Tiles and bean bags this morning. Eleanor and a friend built with the Magna-Tiles in the front area. Cece and Charlotte danced to the “Beanie Bag Dance” with their bean bags.

IMG_7285(4)IMG_7277(4)IMG_7286(3)IMG_7290(4)

We then made our way into the kitchen to draw with markers. We used several colors and talked about what we were drawing on our papers. A friend shared that they were drawing a “car.”

IMG_7306(4)IMG_7304(4)IMG_7302(4)IMG_7303(4)IMG_7305(4)

Our friends also engaged with our Climb & Play soft blocks and rainbows. We used the rainbow blocks like teeter-totters, tunnels or blocks to lounge on. Other friends explored the soft blocks by climbing on top of them or sitting on them.

IMG_7312(2)IMG_7313(4)IMG_7315(3)IMG_7317(4)IMG_7318(3)IMG_7316(3)IMG_7320(3)

During our time outside, we explored the plants, walked on the balance beam course, sat on a rock under the tree’s shade, pushed bikes up the hill after riding them down, engaged with tools in the sandbox, and practiced pulling ourselves up to a standing position on the bench.

Good Afternoon!

Today we had a musical morning.  First we danced to BINGO, See The Bunnies Sleeping?, and Itsy Bitsy Spider.

IMG_7158(3)IMG_7156(4)

We then engaged with rhythm sticks.  We tapped them while marching around the front circle to Ants Go Marching.

IMG_7168(4)IMG_7163(4)IMG_7165(3)

Since it was raining outside, we explored our sound sensory tubes and some of the items mimic the sound of rain.  We also engaged in lifting Miss Tina’s big rain stick to make the rain sound.

IMG_7173(3)IMG_7180(4)IMG_7174(3)IMG_7177(4)IMG_7170(3)IMG_7188(4)IMG_7191(4)IMG_7192(4)IMG_7182(4)IMG_7181(4)IMG_7178(4)

Miss Tina then created an obstacle course for us with the plastic blocks, tiny turf stair and slide and the textured stepping stones.

IMG_7216(4)IMG_7213(4)IMG_7210(4)IMG_7214(4)IMG_7215(4)

We then headed outside to engage in water play with rubber insects, dinosaurs, measuring cups/spoons and bowls.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we offered a loose parts activity with playdough.  We simply added rings and sticks along with the playdough… and imaginations blossomed into all sorts of creations.  Most friends started by stacking the beads on the sticks.  As time progressed and friends explored, we saw all kinds of ideas take shape into porcupines, jellyfish, sea turtles, fish with nests and babies and even a cat in a bed.  Just adding a couple of components that are outside of the norm, sends the mid of a child into new realms of thought!

IMG_4225(8)IMG_4261(6)IMG_4263(5)IMG_4270(7)IMG_4269(7)

At the sensory table, we offered a “water marble run building center”.  Kids were able to explore the way water flows and how to best put pieces together working with gravity.  Friends chose to engage in a great deal of cooperative building.  In the beginning, several kids worked on their own “water-run”, but as the project evolved, most of the kids teamed up to build one enormous water-run in the center of the table.  Their creation gave the classroom a whimsical Dr Suess feel with so many colorful wheels and funnels.

IMG_4197(7)IMG_4241(7)

We sure felt the heat today so we offered several different water opportunities including the water table, individual trays, and the large blue tuff tray. We made sure to stay cool and the shade from our large tree sure helped!

Good Afternoon!

We started our morning by reading books. Several friends chose books from our reading shelves for Miss Tina to read to us. The babies explored the books on the shelves too. Some friends chose books to look at individually.

IMG_7073(3)IMG_7079(4)IMG_7081(4)IMG_7097(4)

We made our way to the kitchen to engage with puzzles. We let our friends gradually work their way up to more complex puzzles, and they all did great at solving the puzzles presented to them. A few of our friends who were only able to complete up to 4-piece puzzles in the past, mastered 7 or 8 piece puzzles this morning!

IMG_7085(4)IMG_7086(4)IMG_7088(4)IMG_7087(4)IMG_7089(4)IMG_7090(4)

We enjoyed water play this morning. A friend shared that there were “bugs in the water,” pointing out the colorful, plastic insects in the water tray. Other friends used watering cans to explore the water table or sat by a water tin to explore leaves. Our babies engaged with the trucks by the ramps with their older friends.

Our friends all enjoyed yogurt popsicles this afternoon. Thank you Miss Ashley for making pops with leftover yogurt and strawberry pieces!

Good Afternoon!

This morning friends explored a tray filled with dry grains and loose parts.  Several friends became interested in finding all of the individual corn kernels and collecting them in a can.  A group worked together carefully sorting through the tiny pieces, pushing their fine motor skills to the limit.  The sound of the kernels on the metal can reminded them of popped corn popping, so they pretended they were making popcorn.

We use a lot of “loose parts” play at Wee Friends because it has so many benefits for your child’s development.  Play that is open-ended requires higher level thinking and creativity to figure out how to use the objects provided.  Loose parts foster a more experimental nature to play, giving kids time and space to try things and problem solve which is less likely in structured activities.

IMG_4095IMG_4100IMG_4071

Outside, we created a variety of water exploration areas.  A favorite was the large tray filled with floating pieces of bark and colored bugs.  The kids made the wood into boats for the bugs.  They experimented with weight, size and balance, finding the perfect combination to create a “bug boat”.  The kids moved the water to create wind and waves, watching how the boats moved with the flow of the water.  This is a great example of play based learning as kids are exploring concepts of science during play.

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in the bird seed/rice sensory table.  We were scooping using plastic egg halves, scoops and cups.  We also explored and named the rubber bugs that were in the mixture.

Good Afternoon!

At the art center this morning, we enjoyed emerging our bodies in the painting process! Putting our hands in paint is always a strong draw, and when their is a draw there is usually a reason developmentally. Kids are extremely hands on and need their bodies sensory systems to be fully stimulated in order to learn best. All of this explains the natural pull toward hands in paint!

IMG_3948IMG_4003IMG_4014

Finger painting is always better when there is a printing option thrown into the mix :).

IMG_3979IMG_3989IMG_3991

Sand has been extremely popular as a request among our class.  It was requested again today, and following the interest we put together something that satisfied what friends were wanting to explore but had an aspect that was novel and stimulating for new ideas.
