Happy Tuesday!

This morning we engaged with our sound sensory tubes.  We were tipping them back and forth and watching the items in the tube move to the other end and hear the different sounds they made.  We also saw that the feathers moved slower and quieter than the other items. Meanwhile, both babies got some time on their playmat together!

Then, we went into the kitchen and engaged with the wooden shape loose parts and animals.  Several friends were stacking their shapes together to see how high they could stack them before it fell over.

The rainy weather kept us inside, but we still had lots of fun! We enjoyed the habitrail and had so much fun crawling in our large tunnel!

Good Afternoon!

We introduced the word ‘sequence’ this morning during our PREK1 sign in. We talked about how a sequence is an order in which we do things. We looked at our morning and wrote our name under what came next in our sequence: washing our hands after coming inside or going straight to the lunch table?

This lead into our group time as well. We read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ while looking at our calendar we use everyday. We looked at how the days of the week are in sequential order and how the days of the week are essentially a pattern, as they repeat every seven days.

K.1.4: Identify and order events that take place in a sequence.

K.M.2: Understand concepts of time, including: morning, afternoon, evening, today, yesterday, tomorrow, day, week, month, and year. Understand that clocks and calendars are tools that measure time.

This morning we found inventive ways to use magnets and loose parts.  We had a lot of innovative ideas about how to use the magnets and materials.  One friend was interested in moving things with magnets.  He tried to make magnetic chains of objects, then asked for a string to hang objects from.  Several kids got interested in this idea and enjoyed hanging something from string and moving it with the magnet.  These kinds of exploratory opportunities allow kids to tinker, experiment and observe.  Deep learning occurs as kids curiously interact with the world this way and follow up the questions they have about how things work.

Our sensory bin material was changed out today and children are always so anxious to see what the sensory bin will offer. Kinetic sand was placed in the bin along with trucks and various sized rocks. Children noticed that each truck made different tracks in the sand! Sensory materials are essential in an early childhood classroom as children learn through all of their senses, especially touch!

Happy Monday!

We kicked off our week by diving into time words, specifically the word ‘morning’. Each PREK1 member came to sign in this morning where they signed under the activity that they do every morning before coming to school.

Later on in group, we read ‘The Child’s Calendar’ which focuses on each month of the year, the holidays that take place, and how the weather typically is like. Children were eager to share what month their birthday was in as well as other months that they knew. A few friends even shared their favorite “season”.

K.M.2: Understand concepts of time, including: morning, afternoon, evening, today, yesterday, tomorrow, day, week, month, and year. Understand that clocks and calendars are tools that measure time.

IMG_0692IMG_0700IMG_0698

This morning we explored a loose parts, open-ended building activity.  We came up with many creative ideas and enjoyed cooperative imaginative play with everyone’s creations.  Among our creations, we had a parking garage next to a pool, a parking lot surrounded by boulders and trees, and a fire station.  These kinds of activities encourage kids to think openly since no object has a specific expected function.  I loved watching how the kids shared and built upon one another’s ideas.  They practiced great conversational skills during a back and forth brain storm of possibilities.  Kids worked on negotiating and making a case for something they were interested in.  These skills are so valuable as kids will take them into long term positive life experiences.

PREK2: This morning we read the story “What Moms Can’t Do”.  In the book we noticed that some of the story was set in the morning and some in the evening.  We noticed what things happen at different times of the day.  After the story we each got a turn to sort what things happen in the morning and what things happen in the evening.

Good Afternoon!

We had an array of activities offered throughout the morning that aimed to meet the needs of all of our kiddos!

Several friends explored the art area where a glue interest popped up! Children grabbed glue bottles and a tray to practice gluing materials to their paper. One friend took his foam shapes and placed them in the shape of a rectangle and glued them down.

IMG_1381IMG_1377IMG_1371

A loose parts activity was offered in the tuff tray where we watched as children used the materials in different ways. One friend made several small towers and kindly asked the friend next to him, “What are you making?”. Another friend used the “kids” and once she ran out, used other materials to complete her circle.

It was the perfect October morning so we headed outside. We have several pairs of siblings who are always excited to see one another!

IMG_0645IMG_0637

We had our first farm trip this morning.  What a diverse and wonderful farm experience!  First, we went into Farmer Charlotte’s green house where we got to pick and eat tomatoes, beans and carrots.  It took all of us to get a large carrot out of the ground.  We washed it and then sliced it up in the outdoor kitchen to have a taste.   The turkeys were interested too, so the kids fed them some bean pods.

IMG_8603IMG_8608IMG_8596IMG_8579IMG_8578IMG_8573IMG_8613

Next, we visited animals in the barn.  We got to pet a sheep and feed a horse some hay.

IMG_8622IMG_8628IMG_8644

Lastly, we explored the woods where we tried out the rope swing and built a little camp out of logs, sticks and other natural materials we found.  Everyone had a great time and can’t wait for next week!

Happy October!

This morning, we pulled out the rainbows and boats! Some children rocked themselves back and forth while others sat in the colorful boats and listened to “Row Row Row Your Boat.” Our babies also enjoyed the morning, watching all the activities and being helped by their friends.

IMG_2450IMG_2454IMG_2455IMG_2460IMG_2459IMG_2532IMG_2535

Later, we brought out our Mix and Match Magnetic Animals! Friends showed the various animal parts they found to Miss Audrey, and made all sorts of different animal combinations.

IMG_2467IMG_2471IMG_2474IMG_2477IMG_2469

When we went outside, many of our friends spent time in the sand box today, filling up trucks or making holes in the sand. Other friends went down the slide.

Good Afternoon!

We used the book ‘Tacky In Trouble’ today for our PREK1 sign in. Children were able to identify the other main character besides Tacky: the elephant!

Later on in group, we read the story while we paid close attention to the details of the story. When we were done reading it, we all worked together to add to our chart and boy, did our group recall the story in great detail! One friend added a specific event just to be reminded by another peer that there was an important event that happened right before! We filled in our chart and were happy to see that September is over! We flipped our calendar to the month of October! Smile

We are so proud of all the progress our journal kids are making.  Our older kids are doing a great job with letter sounds and kid spelling.  Our younger kids are getting the hang of how to talk about their drawings and creating more deliberate journal entries.

IMG_1221IMG_1216IMG_0787

In the art center we used the materials that kids were interested in yesterday.  Today we used the materials to experiment with and make art.  Kids expressed that they were interested in openly exploring the paint squeeze bottles and the squeegee, so we created art with them all morning.  This activity proved to be great for keeping attention.  Some friends stayed for 20-30 minutes to paint.
