Good Afternoon.

With it being too cold to go outside these days we decided to bring some snow fun into the classroom.

Miss Bekah got our large red bins and put a lot of snow in them for our friends to have fun with. We added trucks of all kinds, cups and snowflake stampers. We had a snowy blast!! Some of us even ate the snow. Smile

After snow play Adrian must have been a tad cold because he went right to the dress up hats. He tried on every hat available to him and more friends joined in the hat fun.

Good Afternoon!

Our theme today was rhyming words and to kick of K group, we read ‘There’s a Wocket in my Pocket’! Afterwards, we gathered in a circle where we played a rhyming word memory game! Each friend had a turn to flip over two cards to see if they were a match. If they were, they got to keep them and if they weren’t, they placed the cards back down. Our memory was on point! Children even helped one another remember where a certain card was—how thoughtful!

K.RF.3.1: Identify and produce rhyming words.

DSCN9054DSCN9052DSCN9051

In PREK2, members of the group worked together to come up with their own rhyming words. Miss Kim had written down five words and collectively, friends thought of a rhyming word for each. For example, Miss Kim wrote the word ‘jar’ which elicited friends to say ‘par’!

DSCN9057

Rhyming words was the focus of our kindergarten sign in activity. Five words were the focus on the sign in paper as well as five words on loose paper. Using their knowledge of rhyming words, friends matched up the words that rhymed as we read them together out loud.

K.RF.3.1: Identify and produce rhyming words.

While children were coloring at the art table this morning, a few friends became interested in mixing colors. So, instead of mixing our markers together, Miss Kim set up a science experiment where children mixed colors together using water colors! One friend wanted to make the color green so they mixed together blue and yellow water colors.

“For a small child there is no division between playing and learning; between the things he or she does ‘just for fun’ and things that are ‘educational’. The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play.”

Good Afternoon.

We had a very busy day today and we absolutely loved every second of it. We read lots and lots of stories off the kids book shelf and even more off of the teacher shelf.

Once we started reading the teacher stories, Eric Carle books were on the top of our list of favorites. Every friend in the classroom was interested in hearing all of them.

We then had a great time engaging in music colorful play scarves.

While engaged in this fun activity we were able to have multiple learning adventures. We talked about what color of scarf we had, who else had the same color of scarf, and we put our scarves on a specific body part that our music narrator spoke about.

Happy Monday!

After reading, ‘Tacky and the Winter Games’ in K group, we played one round of shape bingo! This week, we’ll be working on identifying various 2-D and 3-D shapes. I gave the group a description of the shape I was referring to and friends worked together to identify it! Once they did, they found the shape on their bingo board and covered it with a colored counter.

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube.

DSCN9000DSCN8993DSCN8992

In PREK2, the focus was on lowercase letters versus uppercase letters. Miss Kim wrote her group member’s names in all uppercase letters and friends worked together to write their name in lowercase letters. We find that lowercase letters are more challenging to write when children are first starting out because there are move curves to the letters as opposed to uppercase letters which are made up of mostly straight lines.

DSCN9003DSCN9002

Each kindergartener came up to the island where they signed in to start their day. There were a few steps that they had to follow to complete their journal:

1. Trace the lines of each shape with a marker (some counted as they did this!).

2. Identify the shape.

3. Kid spell or work with a teacher to write the names of the shapes.

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube.

K.W.2.1: Write most uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet, correctly shaping and spacing.

Last week, an art project was started about one of our favorite topics as of late: eels!

Today, friends took turns painting the eel.

Before Franklin started painting, he got out a science book and turned to the glossary that he learned about last week. He was able to find ‘eels’ and figure out what page the information he was looking for was on.

DSCN8933DSCN8955DSCN8943

Other engaging activities were taking place throughout the morning.

Daniel and Evie used small lights to observe glass figurines. They made comments to each other based on what they saw.

DSCN8973DSCN8977

Our younger friends have been frequenting the art table quite often lately! They love to create pictures for family members, teachers, or peers. Children’s drawing skills are continuing to grow and we love to watch the process children go through as they start putting their thoughts down onto paper.

Good afternoon, I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

Paige says, Hello with a big smile to get the blog started. Smile

Today we read stories in a different location than the normal reading center. The rocking chair was quite the hit as friends would choose a book, we would read it, then the book would be put away and then another friend would take a turn reading. Smile It was a great way for  allof our friends to get some individual lap time.

Happy Friday!

After reading, ‘The Giving Tree’ in K group, we brought back out the laminated number sheets from yesterday per the kids request! They each got a new sheet with four numbers on it but under each number, there was a matching dot illustration.

Today, we worked for deliberately with the numbers. Every child said aloud the four numbers that were on their sheet. After, I asked questions like, “Who has the highest number out of all 5 sheets?” or “Who has the lowest number?”.

Friends took it upon themselves to start comparing their numbers and found peers who had the same number as they did!

We moved into addition problems. I told Franklin, “Find the two smallest numbers on your sheet and add them together.” Each friend had different instructions but at the end, children were adding up all of the numbers on their sheet. They completely took over this activity and expanded it on their own!

K.NS.4: Perform one-on-one correspondence tasks.

In PREK2, children found the first letter of their first name and drew a line from the uppercase letter to its lowercase counterpart!

DSCN8926DSCN8928DSCN8927

During kindergarten sign in, children took three scattered configurations and counted each. They took the configurations and matched it to the correct number that was written on their sign in.

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

Earlier in the week, I shared that we’ve had a fascination with eels recently! A few of our kindergarteners have been invested in eels and using them in their art and play which spearheaded this art activity!

Today, we extended our eel art activity by exploring paper mache! A few days ago, friends started using tape and newspaper to create their own eel and today, we tackled the paper mache! Check back in next week to see the next step.

Happy Friday! I hope you have all had a great week.

The neighbors were getting a delivery and friends happened to see the large Lowe’s truck just outside our classroom. We were very happy to watch them unload the appliance out of the back of the truck. We can never see too many large trucks!!

Good Afternoon!

In K group, our activity started with each friend choosing a laminated piece of paper that had four various numbers on it, ranging from 1-20.. Each friend took a turn identifying the numbers that were on their sheet. Once everyone identified their numbers, each group member closed their eyes and placed their index finger on their board. They opened their eyes and looked to see what number they had chose. Friends grabbed the colored counters and counted out the correct number of counters and placed them in the number circle.

K.NS.4: Perform one-on-one correspondence tasks.

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

DSCN8818DSCN8816

In PREK2, children played alphabet Go Fish! Throughout the game, they had conversations about the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters.

DSCN8821DSCN8822

We’ve been focused on syllables this week during our K focused groups and during sign-in, friends sorted several words based on the number of syllables. There were three groups: 1 syllable, 2 syllables, and 3 syllables. We read the words together and friends used mostly the clapping method to figure out how many syllables were in each word. There were a few times were friends corrected themselves which is fantastic!

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

The rest of our morning offered up endless building experiences and playdoh creations.
