Sounds of the morning:

“Do you have a zebra?!”—“Go Fish!”—“One, two, three, four, five..”—“Oops! My screw broke the wood in half!”—“I’m taking this money to the bank!”—“Millie, would you like to play with me?”

There is constant conversation going on all day long. Between the kids and us. Between each other. Questions. Statements. Facts. The environment was buzzing with sounds. Our classroom is set up so children have choices, lots of choices. It just so happened that all morning, children were playing in groups or with one other child. We have a few spaces within the class where children can be alone but surprisingly, these spaces weren’t utilized today! Smile

I found this Teacher Tom article this morning and it definitely rings true!

“Then, as is every wall’s destiny, they kicked it over with such an eruptive suddenness that it alarmed us all. I had walked away just prior to that moment and returned, worried that they would somehow need big, responsible, adult me in the aftermath of that wall coming down, but I saw only smiles on beet red faces as they made rubble of that wall that could no longer even pretend to keep anyone out.”

Good Afternoon!

An art activity was made available this morning that used a variety of supplies including paint, paper, droppers, glue, cotton balls, and straws.

Children started by using the paint dropper to add paint to any area of their paper that they’d like—this represented the rain. Then, if they chose, they could add clouds which is where the cotton balls came into play! Our favorite part? Using the straw to move the paint around on the paper and cotton balls: our breath is powerful!

As we headed outside, we saw that the wee wee’s had gotten out chalk which we decided to utilize! A few older friends started off by playing tic tac toe but they had to change the board and the rules since there were three players that were involved. Then, they decided to draw with the chalk on the sidewalk. Penny drew a house while another friend made a hop scotch board all the way up to 15!

Even though chalk is an extremely well known tool that children use, extending play with chalk is really easy!

For example: (all dependent upon readiness and ability!)

Have your child draw a hopscotch board and go up to a given number. This allows children the opportunity to write numbers.

Draw three squares or rectangles and in each space, write words that rhyme. If your child is still working on rhyming words, write a word in the first space and they can come up with two rhyming words for the open spaces.

Make a chalk ladder and in each space, write an equation (8+2 for example) and when your child jumps on that space, they need to verbally say the answer.
