Happy Friday!

Our Friday was filled with smiles and hugs.

IMG_0974IMG_0975

It was also filled with loud sounds. Laughter. Music. Screams.

Once friends decided music was what they wanted, it got a little loud (ok..very loud). Friends spun around shaking their maracas. We shared with one another.

Fun was had by all. Music gets us in our happy place Smile.

As a special Friday treat, Naia and her family brought in a wonderful snack! It consisted of watermelon, coconut cream, and yummy fresh blueberries. Let’s just say that we ‘downed’ it (aka..there was none left).

WF Friday 6/6 Cylinders

014

It began yesterday with winding yard around wooden spools. Because of the interest it held, we offered it again this morning.

The interest in spools became of study of cylinders. We tooled around the basement and found other cylinder shaped materials to work and wind with.

Then Finn around with the ultimate cylinder: A Dr. Suess hat.

And so our Friday morning cylinder work continued“

028

So what is the Point of Cylinder Work?

  • Visual discrimination of size and texture (math) and extreme focus on an object (readiness to read)
  • Shape recognition
  • Eye/hand coordination
  • The materials we set out encouraged active involvement as opposed to passive looking
  • Thinking outside the cylinder: “Look at my puppy!”, “Look at my yo-yo!” “Can I use the cylinders to make my tail?”

“These learning materials are designed to promote learning through the senses and to train the senses for learning.”

-Maria Montessori

Today we welcome Crystal to Wee Friends. Crystal is a fourth year Elementary Education major/Early Childhood minor from IUSB. She will be spending the month of June with us! We welcome you to Wee Land!

We hopped around the map this morning moving from safari tracks to winding spools. We explored color patterns with letter blocks and took dollies on a trip to Africa. We helped Finn repair his parrot and created our own with Floam and feathers.

036

Friends asked to hear FROZEN. We started the soundtrack and the imaginative play burst out in fractals of wonder, including the “carnation of the queen” and the men hacking the ice.

And some friends just wanted to belt it out.

Good Afternoon!

Sensory work this morning consisted of a bird seed mixture in individual tubs. We used bowls, cups, spoons, and other various items to manipulate the bird seed.

IMG_0788IMG_0793IMG_0795

Nora looked closely at her bird seed that was in her cup. Saskia thought of the idea to put the tub on her lap so that she didn’t get too much bird seed on the floor.

For breakfast, children had toast with butter along with strawberries. Lunch consisted of cheese filled tortillas, corn, and blueberries. PM snack was whole milk yogurt with blueberries.

Have a terrific night.

WF Wednesday 6/4 HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEL!

012

Our fabulous Mel turns 29 today. And WEE love to celebrate birthdays!

We kept busy on this rainy day. We studied a new library collection of safari books. We painted and worked on the crocodile. That activity morphed into creating (“sticking the guts back in”)paper fish. We cleaned, gutted, seasoned and grilled a Pompano fishy. Many of our friends loved the grilled fish and gobbled it down. We read a book about giraffes which led us to measuring our own necks, and then the croc’s neck. We played a game in which we tried to use our human necks to reach down far enough and pick up fruit.  A few friends built a picnic table out of big wooden blocks.

069

Mel has been teaching at Wee Friends for seven years. Times that by 9 and you’ll get her special number. We love Mel 6×9 +infinity +forever+around the universe three times. 017

Wee Sprouts: Carrots. Breakfast: Cereal and bananas. Lunch: Chicken and cheese on tortillas, mixed fruit salad (grapes/strawberries/blueberries/bananas and corn. Snack: Cheese and crackers.

Good Afternoon!

To start off this Tuesday, music was turned on and we let loose. Friends spun and turned in circles while singing ‘Wheels on the Bus!’

IMG_0684IMG_0685

To add to the music, friends requested shakers along with different musical instruments. Maya was quite protective of her favorite blue tube Smile.

IMG_0718IMG_0717

As Tate, Lucy, and Maya went down for a nap, Nora, Naia, and Saskia headed out for a lovely walk. We passed by different colored flowers, the mail truck, and a BIG tractor! We also each got to pick a dandelion.

IMG_0739IMG_0740IMG_0744

Once we got back to Wee Friends, we stayed outside since it was b-e-a-utiful!

IMG_0748IMG_0753

For breakfast, children had corn flakes with grapes/banana. Lunch consisted of chicken/avocado salad, mixed vegetables, and strawberries. PM snack was cheddar cheese and banana along with a special treat: homemade banana popsicles! Yummy!! We loved them! (Especially our teething friends Smile)

WF Tuesday 6/3 Nicole the Rolly Polly

024

Today was Emerson’s first official day at Wee Friends! Welcome, Emerson, Nicole and Jerry! We are so glad to have in the Wee Fam.

One of the big works today was the creation of a rolly polly habitat. As it turns out, Emerson is also a big fan of our beloved potato bugs. Well into our habitat hunt, Emerson expressed “I still miss my mom.” “Would you like to name one of the potato bugs after her?” asked a teacher. “That way, when you feel that aching for mom again, you can visit Nicole, check on her, and give her lots of love.” “SURE!” exclaimed Emerson in a high pitched voice filled with glee!

036

And so begins the creation of our first summer habit. We welcome our newest lovely namesake, Nicole the Rolly Polly. And her dear Emerson, of course.

Wee Sprouts: Cucumbers. Breakfast: Cinnamon toast with bananas. Lunch: chicken and avocado on flat bread, strawberries and carrots. Snack: Homemade fresh fruit/yogurt pops and nuts.

Purple Porch Co-Op Bounty in today’s lunch:
