Happy Wednesday!

This morning we cut open our pumpkin.  Miss Bekah scooped out the pulp and seeds from the inside for us to explore with our hands on our tray.  We also talked about the outside parts of the pumpkin, the stem and skin and the color of it.

IMG_4755IMG_4742IMG_4740IMG_4757IMG_4736IMG_4742

Then, we went to the habitrail, found our shakers and danced along to “Shake Your Sillies Out.”

IMG_4760IMG_4761IMG_4762IMG_4763

Outside, we did lots of raking! Throughout our outside time, many friends used rakes to help the big kids make a big leaf pile.

Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 sign in focused on arrangements of items. We used stars specifically and worked on seeing how many stars were in this configuration but tried not counting them! A few friends were ready for this concept as they identified that each line had three stars and were able to add 3 and 3 together, making six!

K.NS.6: Recognize sets of 1 to 10 objects in patterned arrangements and tell how many without counting.

This morning we explored words and letters in the art center.  We rolled our playdough out on our tray.  Then, we selected a word card.  We tried creating the word with cookie cutter letters on our rolled out play dough.  Some of us created several words or our name while others made “pizza dough”.  It was a well rounded activity :).

IMG_4103IMG_4111IMG_4139IMG_4125

Other kids went in their own direction.  One friend was interested in making numbers all the way around her drawing.  We got out the number chart to help.  Later, she said she had more space after ten and wondered how to write more numbers.  We got to talk about adding the number one in front and then counting back up to ten as we go through the “teens”.  It was a great example of an authentic learning experience!

Good afternoon! We spent some time in the block area playing with Duplos. Cece, Rowan and a couple other friends took turns taking Duplos out of the basket to connect them.

IMG_4584IMG_4586IMG_4603

We also played with baby dolls several times throughout the morning! Rowan brought his baby doll to the ballet bar to look at their reflections together in the mirrors and another friend sat on the rocking chair with her baby doll. Even baby Diana played with a baby doll!

IMG_4596IMG_4598IMG_4619IMG_4623IMG_4630(1)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in a sensory experience with playdough.  We squeezed it with our hands and worked to flatten it using a wooden hammer and rolling pin.

IMG_4649IMG_4651IMG_4654IMG_4655IMG_4658IMG_4661

Outside, we rode on the teeter totters and bikes. Later on, a few friends decided to explore the vehicle ramps. They picked a couple vehicles and pushed them down the ramp for another friend to catch.

Good Afternoon!

We worked with singular and plural nouns for our PREK1 sign in this morning. Children used the context clues around the two options for nouns which was the word ‘two’. Based on the word ‘two’ children knew that the correct noun was eyes, not eye.

This morning we explored different ways to remove seeds from a pumpkin.  We chose from tools like a melon baller, an ice cream scoop, a spoon and tweezers.  After trying each one we thought about which one we liked using the best or which we felt worked the best.  Some kids voted for the spoon while others favored the tweezers.  We baked the seeds in the oven and we are all excited to taste them at snack time!

Today, we offered an activity requested by a few curious kids who love magnets.  Some friends mentioned they would love to experiment again with the magnets and a compass.  We got out all our magnet science options and let the kids explore openly.  One new discovery was the ability to move the round magnets around the top of a can using a magnetic wand!

Happy Halloween!

This morning, we looked at various fall and Halloween books together! Cece and two friends looked at books on their own while Miss Audrey and Miss Bekah read to other friends.

IMG_4302IMG_4306IMG_4305IMG_4304IMG_4310

Many friends also enjoyed dressing up and playing with baby dolls in house keeping! Rowan and another friend wore hats and shoes, walking around the room with them and another friend was focused on feeding her baby and putting her baby in a sleep sack.

IMG_4314IMG_4309IMG_4364IMG_4397IMG_4370IMG_4358IMG_4363IMG_4360IMG_4365

IMG_4341IMG_4349IMG_4347IMG_4346IMG_4344IMG_4330IMG_4324IMG_4320

They started with the xylophones, hearing the sounds the bars made and then flipping it over and rubbing the mallet against the ridges to hear that sound.. Cece and Rowan also explored the shakers, picking up and shaking the various shakers.

Happy Halloween!

We started our day with a baking project.  Everyone helped Miss Ashley make pumpkin muffins for our special Halloween snack!

IMG_3685IMG_0941IMG_3705

We enjoyed exploring several art and sensory/imaginative play activities in the classroom.  We worked on pastel Halloween pictures brushed with black watercolor in the art center.  We made witches brew in the tuff tray and enjoyed some imaginative Halloween play with friends. We also enjoyed listening to some Halloween stories!

While we were clearing the garden yesterday one of the kids asked if we could measure the tallest sunflower in the garden.  Today, we brought our measuring tools out with us.  We cut one of the flower stalks and brought it to the deck.  We used our new tape measures to find out how long the sunflower was.  It took the help of several kids holding two tape measures down but we found it was six feet long!

Good Afternoon!

**PAJAMA DAY TOMORROW!

Our PREK1 friends came to the sign in board this morning where they chose one shape, identified it, and sorted it into the correct group based on the number of sides.

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g. colors, shapes, and opposites).

IMG_1428IMG_1423IMG_1417

Today became all about numbers.  Several kids started counting the “Halloween pastries” they made out of playdough yesterday as they added one topping for each.  Today we took a jar of those toppings to the round table along with a bowl of numbers and offered further exploration in counting.  We had great questions like “How do I make 11 with numbers?” and “What should I use the 0 for?”.  We even got to try some early addition.

IMG_3577IMG_3570IMG_3569

In the science area we used our new tape measures to measure how long everything in the science area was :).  There has been a lot of interest in measuring so we reinforced that interest with some new tools!

IMG_3588IMG_3585IMG_1419

Our journals just keep on getting more complex and interesting!  Here are a few from this week!
