Happy Friday!

We had lower numbers today so we thought, “Great! More one on one time to spend with children!”

And while we did this, we also saw just how independent and self sufficient these children are.

Case in point:

As I was working on kindergarten sign in, Zoey shared a thought: “I want to write a story about me.” She joined me at the island and together (mostly her!), we kid spelled, ‘Back to bed Ed’, which was the title of her story. As she was drawing her picture to match the title of her story, Emma came up to the island and commented, “Zoey, I want to write a book too!”

Instead of asking us for help, Zoey took the reins and told Emma what she’d need to make a book. After gathering the materials together, they sat next to each other at the island and worked through letters and the sounds of those letters. Of course, a teacher was right there to answer any questions they had but for the most part, they became the teachers and taught one another.

Our goal as preschool educators is to give children the tools to be their own teacher as well as giving them the confidence to teach their peers.

What a way to end the week.

Happy Wednesday!

Today while the bigger kids were in the kitchen helping make fresh new playdoh, Miss Nesta enjoyed reading a few of the new books Miss Tami bought for us to all enjoy.

PA233867PA233868

Meanwhile, the playdoh making and cooking action was taking off and the kids were absolutely loving it and enjoying the experience! They learned how to measure the ingredients that go into making our playdoh and they were able to dump in and stir everything all together.

After Miss Rebekah was all finished cooking the playdoh, (and it cooled some)  friends were able to feel it and see that it was warm and then how it quickly became cooler so that we could all play with it! We were also able to choose our color…. We chose RED!!!

This activity was great for enhancing our sensory skills and our hand-eye coordination skills, as well as math and science concepts integrated into the making of the playdoh. We had a GREAT time!!! We LOVE helping.

Good Afternoon!

In K/PREK1 group, we read ‘Madeline’ before graphing the number of letters in our name. Each friend shared how many letters were in their name and once we were done graphing everyone’s information, we noticed a few things:

  • N is the only friend in group with four letters in her name.
  • Cassie was the only friend in group with six letters in her name.
  • The majority of us had five letters in our name!

PREK2 friends used an ice cube tray and different colored hexagons to create their own ABAB pattern!

The art table was busy with bodies moving around, ideas flowing, and conversations occurring. The way our art table is set up, children have the opportunity to create whatever they want. Open-ended art allows children to use a variety of materials while having no set guidelines or model to follow.

Our creativity was booming this morning as children became VERY excited about their creations.

I’ve attached this short article about process art verses product art. Process art allows children to make their own choices while product art often brings up questions such as, “Am I doing this right?” or “Can I be done?” as well as comments like, “Mine doesn’t look like yours.”

Children take ownership and pride in their process artwork because they are the ones in control, making all of the decisions!

Good Afternoon!

After reading ‘The Very Clumsy Click Beetle’ by Eric Carle in K/PREK1, N raised her hand and shared, “That book said the same thing over and over. Kind of like a pattern.”

N noticed that there was a pattern in the way that the author shared the story. Several times, the author wrote ‘And with a loud click…it flipped through the air.” The click beetle’s goal was to flip through the air and land on it’s feet but after many attempts, the beetle kept landing on its back.

Once we finished discussing the story and completed calendar, each child was asked to roll up their mat AFTER giving me a pattern of their own. The patterns that children shared were:

Penny: unicorn, heart, love, unicorn, heart, love

Grady: ice cream, soup, ice cream, soup

David: ice cream, popsicle, ice cream, popsicle

Chloe: hot, cold, hot, cold

N: cat, bat, cat, bat (Grady shared, “N did rhyming words too!”)

K.CA.5: Create, extend, and give an appropriate rule for simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers and shapes.

Jack and Cassie helped Miss Kim make homemade pancakes for lunch! They helped measure the ingredients while other peers were at the art table, creating spooky Halloween drawings with stories to go along with it!

Good Afternoon.

We celebrated a very special little one year old’s birthday today! He brought in a yummy treat for us to enjoy with our afternoon snack! Thank you Smile

Today we painted with pine cones, leaves and the stalks off Indian corn. We used vibrant Fall colors and had a blast with the sensory experience of feeling the different textures of the items used to paint with.
