Good Afternoon!

This morning, one friend built a Magna-Tile house with a cow inside it. Many of her friends joined her and looked at the house and the cow inside.

Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 friends came to sign in this morning where they chose an item from our classroom. They identified its shape and taped it inside the larger shape on the board.

Later on in group, we filled in a shape chart! There were several 2-D shapes that we identified and counted the number of sides and vertices of each shape. We noticed a pattern pretty early on; the number of sides and vertices are the same for each shape. We also loved the word ‘parallelogram’!

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

This morning, we had some more interest in creating “jar storms”.  A friend asked if we could learn about tornadoes so we created one in a jar.  We used our small model to learn about what is  happening in a tornado.  First, we added a teaspoon of dish soap to a tinted jar of water.  We also added a little glitter and some beads to act as “debris” one might find on the ground in the path of a tornado.  Next, we used a long spoon to stir up a funnel.  We could see a tornado form in our jar and reach to the ground, picking up the debris.  We noticed that smaller debris was lifted up into the tornado, while larger debris was moved across the bottom of the jar but remained low in the water.  We learned that a tornado acts much like this when it picks up objects off of the ground.  We also noticed that when we put the spoon back in, the tornado dissipated.  We talked about how a tornado does this when it hits large land formations such as mountains.  Another thing we explored was jar shape.  We tried different shapes and found that the tall thin cylinder shaped jar worked best!

IMG_8367IMG_8362IMG_9651IMG_8363IMG_9633IMG_8365

There were several younger friends who became very interested in trying to catch the debris in the jar, so we set up an area where they could follow that inclination to do some fine motor work!

Good afternoon!

Earlier in the week, we talked about the number of sides specific shapes have. Today, we focused on the number of vertices each shape has. Friends came up to the PREK1 sign in board where they chose a shape name, searched the board for that shape, and used a marker to circle all of the vertices of their shape.

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

This morning one of our kids said he wanted to make a lighting storm in a jar.  He said he had seen this happen somewhere, though he couldn’t remember where.  I told him I knew how to make a rain storm in a jar.  He said he would like to do that…so we went with some child lead curriculum and set up the rain cloud experiment.  Kids picked a color for their precipitation.  We filled a jar with water and added a shaving cream cloud on top.  Kids used an eye dropper to fill their cloud.. The color eventually began to trickle down from the cloud as it would fall from a cloud into the sky.  Lots of kids tried this and enjoyed the experiment.

We had a baking project going on in the kitchen as friends helped make oatmeal apple muffins to go with lunch.  Everyone really enjoyed the muffins and wished there were more!

IMG_8226IMG_3155IMG_8229

We have been using a variety of objects to make shape paintings this week.  At the easel we tried using paper rolls to make circle paintings.  Several kids found they could make patterns.

PREK2: We read the story “I Can Do Hard Things” during group today.  We talked about hard things we had done.  We talked about how even though we had to do something hard, we were ok.  We made a list of “hard things” we have done or things we thought might be hard to do.

Happy Snowy Monday!

This morning we built with our Mix and Match Magnetic Animals.  After we built our animal, we talked about the sound it made.

IMG_8177(1)IMG_8181(1)IMG_8178(1)IMG_8182(1)IMG_8190

We then built with the Magna-Tiles.  A friends shared they were building a “triangle.”  Another friend stacked the color beads on the stacker.

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our week by talking about the shapes that we discussed last week! Each PREK1 group member came to the sign in board where they chose a shape and sorted it based on the number of sides their shape had. As they taped their shape onto the board, they identified other shapes that were in the same group, which meant that they had a similarities surrounding the number of sides each shape had.

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

IMG_3130IMG_3131IMG_3133

This morning we explored different ways to put shapes together in the art center.  We used classroom materials that we use every day to create a shape painting.  This helped us to notice the variety of shapes present in our favorite building materials as we created images with them.  Some kids said the trio blocks reminded them of bricks or roads as they stamped them on the paper.  Others realized some of the shapes contained more than one shape, like the trio blocks were rectangles made of squares.

IMG_8109IMG_8115IMG_8130

At the round table we put shapes together to create new shapes.  Hannah found she could make a hexagon using a variety of other shapes.  She also found she could make her hexagon in more than one way.
