Happy Monday!

In K group, we started reading, ‘Charlotte’s Web’. Chapter books like Charlotte’s Web offer detailed story telling without the pictures. We’ll read a couple chapters a day and recall the important events that happened that day. An activity like this helps children work on comprehension and identifying important events. The active characters and setting often change so these things authentically come up in conversation.

We are here! The last week of FAB’s for the school year. We are ending our FAB cycle by diving into maps: creating them and reading them. The kindergarteners drew a map of their bedroom, complete with doors, windows, a bed, and any other item they have in their room. As they drew the map, they talked about the placement of each item and where it is within their bedroom.

Social Studies: Create maps 2 dimensionally and 3 dimensionally.

Children were offered an art opportunity this morning that involved paint and canvas’s!

Friends used a variety of colors to paint their canvas. Some children chose to paint the entire canvas while others chose to paint a portion of it.

The rest of our day consisted of children becoming invested in various activities and spaces in our environment. The weather prohibited us from going outside but that didn’t stop the kids from moving their bodies or asking for an activity that peaked their interest.

Good Afternoon!

Today we engaged in listening to several books that a teacher read to all of us.  We chose many of our favorites.

P6043607P6043610

We got some beautiful new flowers for the planters around our backyard, which our friends were eager to admire. Each friend took a moment to stop and smell the flowers, and one friend shared they smelled “delicious”! On the staged platform, we also took turns saying “one, two, three” and then a goofy food choice instead of “go”. Miss Mindy started the game with things like yogurt, chocolate, and cookies, and our friends continued with their own contributions like “one, two, three, banana phone!” Our morning outside was full or giggles and smiles!

Looking for some weekend reading? This Teacher Tom blogpost title drew my attention. One of my favorite lines in the post was, “We live in a different sort of world today, but children still need places to play that adults don’t really care about. “The curriculum that matters is what’s inside the child,” Jan says, and these places, these scruffy, uncared for places are where it flourishes best. Childhood comes alive in those places adults don’t really care about.”

Happy Thursday!

Yesterday in K group, we started reading, ‘Freckle Juice’ which is a short chapter book to prepare us for a longer chapter book we’re going to start reading next week! Stay tuned for that!

Freckle Juice is a short chapter book written by Judy Blume. We are a little more than halfway through and just finished up reading about a big event: the dreaded freckle juice!

Andrew Marcus is the main character and he is jealous of his peers’ freckles so he buys a recipe for freckle juice.

Dinner table conversation starter: ask your kindergartener about the book and what’s happened so far. We just found out the ingredients that make up this freckle juice: see how many your K kid can recall Smile.

Our lemonade stand is continuing to run smoothly! Friends are doing a great job at taking turns to make sure that everyone who wants a turn gets one. Children are using the pretend lemons to make lemonade while others are sorting the coins or taking orders! We don’t have JUST lemonade! We have a variety of choices—we’re becoming quite the well oiled machine!

DSCN5389DSCN5391DSCN5408DSCN5417

It was a sun hat, feet in the sand, bugs in our jar kind of morning! Children explored and found a variety of bugs while other buried themselves in the sandbox waist down!

Good Afternoon!

This morning we explored using clear plastic tubing of different lengths and sturdy cardboard tubes to create and build using the loose parts.  Friends were very excited to see that the clear plastic tubes can go all the way through the cardboard tube. Everyone was very creative with the choices of loose parts they decided to use.  Nesta worked on creating patterns with Miss Bekah and made ABAB patterns using the color beads on her clear tubing.

During outside time, the trucks down by the little house were very popular with many friends.  They put Little People in them and drove them around the cement paths. They also like to place pieces of mulch in them to make them hauling vehicles.

A friend also found a roly poly while looking for bugs and was following it as it moved with her finger.

Wee Friends will be closed beginning Thursday, July 1st- Friday, July 9th for summer vacation.  We will re-open Monday, July 12th.  Thank you.

Good Afternoon! I hope everyone had a great weekend and Memorial Day.

This morning we engaged with markers to draw in our journal binders.  Friends enjoyed flipping through their binders to find a blank page for them to create their colorful drawings.

P6013439P6013440P6013443

During outside time, friends were busy exploring and looking to see what they could find in the sandbox and cracks in the cement.  They have very good eyes for finding the tiniest rock or bug.

Our youngest friends engaged in making their own music on the piano and xylophone this morning.  Then while the older friends were napping, they were engaged in looking at many books.

To kick off our short week, we focused in on the individual spaces that we have in our indoor environment! Children wrote as many as they could recall.

Later on in K group, we read, ‘Arthur’s Reading Race’. During the story, Arthur and his sister D.W. headed out into the community to look for words. After we finished reading, we created a web and identified the places that they visited in the community.

Once we were done listing all of the places they had visited, we added a few of our own that we visit within our community!

Social Studies: K.3.3 Locate and describe places in the school and community.

DSCN5263DSCN5268DSCN5147DSCN5159

In PREK2 group, children wrote their name next to a given place in the community. Afterwards, talked about each place within the community.

A few friends have shown interest lemonade stands so today, the Wee Friends lemonade stand opened!

First, a few of our older friends sorted coins into four groups: penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.

Once the coins were sorted, we went over some basic rules before diving into our lemonade stand!

Children used the lemons, pitchers, money, and signs to sell lemonade to their friends!
