Good Afternoon. I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

Today we all were pretty excited about painting!

We used small brushes and sponges on sticks to make our creations. We talked about what we were making and what colors we were going to use for our paintings. One of our friends said he made a “purple school bus.” Smile What a GREAT imagination.

We also enjoyed (as we like to call them) teacher stories. These are books that are soft cover or hard back books with ripable pages.

The kids just LOVE when teachers read these stories. We have many favorites to choose from.

Happy Friday!

We rounded out the week in K/PREK1 with matching the community helper to descriptions of each helper. I read clues aloud  and children had to match the descriptive clues. For most of the helpers, I didn’t even finish the sentence before children were saying the correct helper aloud!

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

In PREK2, children were able to pick a community helper. After their community helper was identified, they matched it to the tool that they use to do their job.

The round table was bustling with different activities, initiated by children throughout the morning. The welcome activity was a collection of wooden materials to build various tracks and creations. Friends asked for puzzles and unifix cubes which lead to patterns and one to one correspondence work.

Scrap cardboard was used at the art table as children painted it different colors. Next week, we’ll continue to extend this art experience.

Good Afternoon and happy Friday!

Today we engaged in a multi-learning activity that was so much for us!

Math, Science, sensory, hand-eye coordination and color recognition were all apart of making playdoh from scratch!

We were all apart in measuring, pouring and stirring the soft dough. We all chose different colors of food coloring  for our playdoh color to be, so we added them all in the mixture to see what color we would get. We were hoping for rainbow… but that didn’t quite happen, we got a grey color instead. Teachers decided to add more blue to the mixture for a more fun and vibrant color. The kids were VERY happy with the finished product!

Good Afternoon!

We’ve been discussing rules that we follow here at school as well as rules children follow at home during our K/PREK1 time this week. After we dove into the relationship of Frog and Toad, we made a list of rules for both school and home as well as any rules that apply to both places. Grady commented, “Well my rule about running is a little different at home. We can run in the basement and living room but we can’t do that at school!”

Social Studies: K.2.3 Give examples of classroom and school rules and explain how each helps us.

The welcome activity opened the door for children to do a variety of things with the unifix cubes. Mack filled the tray with cubes ranging from one to ten while Grady made two long lines of cubes: one green and one yellow and then added the two together.

The art table and outside time were full of free expression, detailed and thought out creations, and tons of smiles.

Good Afternoon!

K/PREK1 friends continued to fill in our community helper chart. I read a description or list of tools needed for a job and children had to decide whether it went under farmer, veterinarian, or doctor. Without prompting, children added on to the tools or description, sharing personal stories that they had of each community helper.

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

DSCN7860DSCN7868DSCN7870

In PREK2, children worked together to form two lists: rules at home and rules at school. One of our FAB’s this week focuses on rules at home/school and why we integrate them into each setting.

DSCN7862DSCN7872

Evie and Penny explored the morning activity where they used a combination of materials available to display their knowledge of one to one correspondence. Different wooden shapes were made available plus various colored bunnies and bears. After placing several wooden pieces onto their tray, they each took a bear/bunny and placed one on each shape.

DSCN7790DSCN7798

The notch blocks continued to be a focus in habitrail as children explored various ways to use them. One focus today was balance and how a tower may fall over if blocks dominated one side of the creation. This observation had children focusing on making sure that blocks were somewhat balanced.

DSCN7792DSCN7797

We read several books..everyday..to different children. Not only do children love snuggling up with a teacher to read one of their favorite stories but this gives teachers an opportunity to form meaningful bonds with children.

There are several friends in our classroom who head to the reading area by themselves to ‘read’ stories. While they are not reading the words, they are observing the pictures and coming up with their own story. They are demonstrating literacy components such as turning the pages the correct way or making sure they’re holding the book the right way.

When children get older, they’re quick to identify punctuation when a teacher is reading to them—a simple story time is turned into an opportunity to authentically assess what aspects of literature children understand.

An open reading area all throughout the day is the best—not only for a quiet space for children but research shows that there are SO many benefits that comes from simply reading to children.
