WF Friday 12/4

This morning friends were invited to come to the art table and create a snowman. Each snowman was made to have the same number of snowballs as letters in the friends’ name. This will give us a chance to compare names later!

018030

This activity also challenged friends’ fine motor skills and gave them an opportunity to practice writing their first name.

032031023026029

Friends were allowed to make their own choices regarding what shapes and objects (hats, scarves, etc.) they wanted on their snowmen.  This led to a wonderful collection of VERY unique snowpeople! They will displayed on our bulletin board back in habitrail if you would like to see them up close and personal.

The rest of our day has been full of sweeping outside with homemade brooms, dancing, cracking open seeds and so much more!

Today’s kitchen activity was playdough! Our friends had plenty of tools to choose from. Anna and Rosemary’s favorites were the rolling pins and mallets, while David liked a spatula he could balance a chunk of playdough on.

Rosemary liked to use her fingers to make circle indents in the dough. Her and Anna also used their fine motor skills to rip the playdough into tiny pieces.

WF Thursday 12/3 Water Play and War

This morning started off with a splash: water play! Friends were invited to the art table to explore with bins of warm water and magna-tiles. The open ended nature of these materials allow children to naturally discover many properties of water.

016

Some friends focused on pouring water over the flat surface of the magna-tiles, while others concentrated on building. Many towers, boats and even a fish tank were built!

024036047

We often ask our kindergarteners to complete more challenging tasks on a daily basis that are not planned ahead of time, but created based on whatever is currently happening in the classroom. Today’s water play was Elliott’s request. During set-up he was tasked with dividing the magna-tiles equally among the 6 bins! Elliott realized that there was not enough of every shape to divide it equally and left the extras back in the bin. Real world problem solving!

013

Today friends also gathered to play a modified version of the card game war. We changed the game slightly so that it wasn’t a competition to see who could get the most cards. The lack of a “winner” encouraged friendly play and allowed us to focus on figuring out the value of each card and which one was the greatest!

We also did a lot of building today. Featured here—a house and a “mice house”:

Our friends wrote in their journals today with markers and crayons. It was a great activity to talk about colors. By putting the markers back in their caps, the kids were practicing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

When snow falls outside, you can bet the Wee Frienders will spot it!

016017

The approaching holiday season is often a time for increased gratitude and joy. We see this festive joy in our Wee Friends throughout the year, but it is amplified the closer the holidays come. Here are a few of the many joyful moments we experienced today.

We delighted in reading non-fiction books with our friends! This picture was taken right before we read a book about ducklings:

Sharing a funny book like Another Brother with a teacher is always special:

Friends enjoyed twirling and swirling ribbons to Christmas music, while our little tree continued to inspire reflection:

Good Afternoon and Happy First Day of December!

When friends walk in the door every morning, they have many options. The first one is obvious: breakfast! Once breakfast is done however, children can head to the table where most mornings, there’s an activity to help friends start their day. Today, we were able to customize snowmen!

001002

It was a morning where kids were involved in different activities whether by themselves or with a friend. Magnatiles have been a top priority lately. Not only are friends building with magnatiles, but they’re bringing other toys into their play such as cars or animals.

018020024

We saw a great display of teamwork today when one of our friends was carrying a box full of math manipulatives and it spilled! Not only did he get on the floor and start picking the pieces up right away but so did many other friends!

021022

For Kindergarten this morning, children gathered at the circle table where the goal was to pair an object with the first sound of that word. For example, pairing ‘M’ with ‘Monkey’. A few friends joined Elliott and Elizabeth which created an awesome learning experience.
