Happy Monday!

This morning we were busy building with our Interstar Connectors.

IMG_6488IMG_6494IMG_6497IMG_6503IMG_6511w

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with playdough.  We used rolling pins and hammers to roll and pound our playdough flat.  We also used shape cookie cutters to cut out shapes and our fingers to poke holes into it.

IMG_6534IMG_6535IMG_6537IMG_6542

Throughout the morning we played with both plastic and stuffed animals! Some friends played pretend with their animals and Cece used a ramp on its side to hold her animals. In housekeeping, a couple friends played with their stuffed animals, hiding them behind their backs for Miss Audrey, then feeding the animals with play food.

Good Afternoon!

**Reminder: Wee Friends will be closed Monday, December 22nd through Friday, January 2nd. We’ll reopen on Monday, January 5th.

We kicked off our week in PREK1 group by starting to talk about coins, the names of the coins, and their values. Today, we focused on the penny, what it looks like, and how much it’s worth. Children identified the penny and wrote their name under the name. Throughout the week, we will authentically plug in coins in our play and child driven curriculum to start children thinking about coins, why we use them, and eventually the names and values!

IMG_2188IMG_6026IMG_6025

This morning we explored counting, coins and their values during an imaginative play experience at the round table.  We looked carefully at each coin and learned the names of quarters, dimes, pennies and nickels.  Older kids learned about the value as well.  Afterwards, kids pretended to buy or sell fruit using their counting skills to count out fruit or coins.  We try to create imaginative play experiences around new skills because this is the best way for kids to have a meaningful learning experience.

PREK2: During group, we talked about giving gifts during the holidays.  We talked about ways we could share gifts we could create on our own or with a little help, like making cards, artwork or baking cookies.  On the board, decided who we would like to give a gift to.

Happy Friday!

This morning we painted with Puffy Paint.  Puffy paint is a mixture of shaving cream, glue, and paint.  We used blue and white to make it a lighter blue and added some sliver glitter to make it sparkle like snow.  We then used a paint brush to dab or spread it to around our papers.  As it dries it will look puffy.

Miss Audrey then brought down our sheer curtain for us to walk through.

In the kitchen, we played with colorful wooden stringing beads loose parts with pattern cards.  We enjoyed stacking the beads, stringing the beads on a pipe cleaner or matching the colors on the pattern card.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we explored an “every shape block building” activity.  Friends were invited to use their creative problem solving to create with the materials at the table.  One thing several friends became interested in was using the slotted pieces along with some round wooden chips.  They found if they made an incline plane at the right angle, they could roll the chips down the slots.  They all enjoyed a little applied physics in their play today!

In the art center we learned about a mixed media technique to experiment with.  We tried making drawings with oil pastels and then painting over the top.  We learned that the oil in the pastel repels the water in the paint…so a little science along with art.

IMG_5928IMG_5924

Several kids continued their interest in maps and globes.  We looked for places like America, India and the North Pole on the map!

Happy Wednesday!

In the kitchen, Miss Audrey brought snow in from outside, so we explored it on our tuff tray! We used shovels to scoop and we played with assorted ocean animals.

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our Wednesday by completing our sign in for our PREK1 group which revolved around states. Yesterday, we identified the city that each friend lives in and today, we focused on the state. This lead into friends asking questions about other states that they’ve been to. We used a map of the United States to identify states such as Michigan, Oregon, New York, New Hampshire, and Florida! We looked at the distance from these states to where we live.

One of our group members became so curious that she started asking about the world so while I was making lunch, we intermediately looked at the world map where we identified places like London and India!

IMG_2107IMG_2110IMG_2112

We used one of our favorite building materials in the tuff tray this morning but we added a fun extension to it: bells! Since the bells are magnetic, children were able to use them in their magnatile creation! A friend started building a church and used a big bell on the top while sharing, “It’s like the church down the street!”. Down the street from Wee Friends, there’s a church and everyday at noon, the big bell at the top of the church chimes which children always love to hear!

IMG_2134IMG_2136IMG_5838IMG_5858IMG_5854

Miss Ashley led our young PREK2 group today and immediately, friends asked to do their yoga/breathing poses that they do before reading a book. They were able to demonstrate several poses, including butterfly pose, to Miss Ashley! They are clearly absorbing (AND LOVE!) this routine in their group time.

Good Afternoon!

This morning, we brought out the felt board Christmas tree, and we worked together to decorate it with assorted shape felt pieces.  We helped Miss Bekah identify the shapes if we knew them or she said the names of them for us.

IMG_6219IMG_6225IMG_6226IMG_6227

Then, Miss Bekah found our winter books, and we spent some time reading the books together.

IMG_6236IMG_6238IMG_6240IMG_6241IMG_6244

We also danced with scarves while listening to the Frozen song, Let It Go that a friend requested.

Good Afternoon!

Throughout the week, we’ll be talking about maps and globes in our PREK1 group. Today for their sign in activity, we talked about cities and specifically the city where they live!

We continued this conversation into group time where we read a few pages from the book ‘Here and There’ which highlights different parts of the country and how they do things differently. For example, today we learned that kids as young as six years old travel by train by themselves to get to school! In other parts of the world, children have to walk or hike for several hours to get to class. We got on the topic of underground trains and subways and there was quite a lot of interest surrounding this. For some, it was hard to envision as one child asked, “How are they underground on a train when there’s animals that live underground?!”

IMG_2100IMG_2103IMG_2101

This morning we explored the way light moves through different objects and how it behaves on reflective surfaces.  Many of the kids enjoyed trying the light with different colored pieces in front of it, changing the color the light made.  Some liked the way the light reflected the prism pieces onto the mirror.  Other kids enjoyed getting creative with the pieces and making beautiful mosaics.  We love all the variety of ideas that come from open ended exploration!
