Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 friends came to the sign in board where they searched for their name and the word card underneath their name. We read the card aloud and then each child searched through a collection of word cards to find the matching rhyming word. For example, Eliza’s word was ‘dog’. She searched through the pile to find the card that read ‘frog’.

K.RF.3.1: Identify and produce rhyming words.

This morning at the breakfast table, one of our older kids talked about how she had been learning to sew at home and she was very excited about it.  We decided to create a “sewing” based activity with some materials we had in the classroom in light of this interest.  There were several kids that got interested in trying this.  We talked about how we use a pattern of up/down as we thread our shoe string through the holes.  Some of our kids loved this activity and stitched through all of the holes using a variety of colors.  This activity also gave us time to have a very long conversation about Greek myths, of all things…which is why I love working with kids!

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our Wednesday by identifying shapes and tracing them for our PREK1 sign in activity. Each child came up to the sign in board where they found a card with their name written on it. They flipped the card over to see the directions which read something like, “Find the circle and trace it.”.

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube.

IMG_7951IMG_3026IMG_3020

This morning we explored some shape building activities.  At the art center, we used clay and toothpicks to make two or three dimensional shapes.  Some kids liked working from a model to make triangular prisms or cubes.  Others took their own approach, putting together unique creations like snowmen, sea urchins and even a hand with many fingers.

IMG_7902IMG_7945IMG_7961

At the round table we tried making shapes using popsicle sticks and clothes pins.  We found we could make three dimensional objects as well as two dimensional shapes.  Some kids even created elaborate play setups like houses and fire hoses.

PREK2: During group we read the story “Triangle”.  After the story we picked a shape from the bowl and decided what shape we had.  We added it to the correct category on our class chart.  Since friends really enjoyed the yoga poses yesterday, each of us picked a favorite pose for our group to do!

Good Afternoon!

We focused on rhyming words this morning for PREK1 sign in where they were each given one word and had to come up with a rhyming word. Kids wrote their word next to their word card. Later on in group, we read ‘There’s A Wocket In My Pocket’ and friends eagerly listened as we read funny rhyming words. We talked about other Dr. Seuss stories that we like that have rhyming word such as Hop On Pop and The Cat In The Hat.

K.RF.3.1: Identify and produce rhyming words.

IMG_2988IMG_2985IMG_2989

We explored a shape stamping art activity this morning.  Kids used their shape stamps to create colorful compositions.  We talked about what shapes we were using as we worked.  Later in the activity one friend wondered if they could use markers to draw into the design.  I thought it was a creative idea that could be explored given the composition of the ink.  A couple of kids noticed and tried the idea themselves.  It made for some very interesting artwork.  When kids ask those kinds of “what would happen if…” questions and then get to explore the idea, they are developing higher thinking skills which we value!

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our week by working with shapes for our PREK1 sign in. Each kiddo came up to the board where we read the shape under their name. We read the shape name and found it on the board. They taped their name inside of the shape.

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube.

IMG_2972IMG_7736IMG_7737

We explored two and three dimensional shapes and how they can fit together this morning.  At the round table, we chose from circles, triangles, rectangles and squares as well as the three dimensional versions…cylinders, pyramids, cubes and prisms.  As we created our buildings, we looked for each shape and talked about how they related.  For instance, one friend built a “tree house”.  We talked about seeing both circles and cylinders, squares and cubes, in the design.

IMG_7706IMG_7709

In the art center, friends created patterns and mosaics using a sand tray of circles/ovals or rectangles/squares.  We talked about the differences in what we could create with these two shapes.

IMG_7733IMG_7772

In the kitchen, friends enjoyed baking with Ms. Ashley.  We helped measure flour, salt and baking powder to make some delicious banana muffins!
