WF Friday 9/5 Origami

042

It began with Elliott expressing “I know a project for today. I want to make a boat to see if it floats.” He found a book, an origami book, that had a picture of a boat. He studied it and made a plan. Jessica noticed him working at the table and joined him. After a discussion, they began the work of creating an origami boat. Other friends noticed and joined them. The table quickly filled up and friends began a morning spending focused time understanding this great art of creating 3D objects with paper. There were rich, in depth conversations about how to fold the edges.  After a creation was complete (lots of boats!) Jessica invited friends to see if their paper boats could float. She offered them a tub of water to investigate scientifically. We hung the letters of the word ORIGAMI up for friends to reference as they worked. Log on to the attached link to see all the benefits of preschoolers working with origami!http://home.earthlink.net/~robertcubie/origami/edu.html

Enjoy the link and your weekend! –Laurie

Elliott: “But there are NO castles in whales!”

Elizabeth: “Yes there are castles in Wales. I’ve been there. I’ve played on the rocks.”

The fertile conversational soil for emergent learning. It was one of the many morning works that brought friends together, closer to understanding one another….and new vocab!

Sophie and Emma have been collecting acorns. We invited friends to create art with the acorn, exploring its purpose and parts as we created.

WWF, 9/3/2014

Hello!

It was a kitchen and housekeeping kind of morning. Everyone gathered in the kitchen where they shared items to make us breakfast. Maya took an orange and put it into a bowl and mixed it up! We made sure that everyone had a kitchen toy so that anyone who wanted to participate had the chance! It’s a wonderful site to see friends choosing what they want to do. It allows us to understand what they’re interested in so that they can be invested in the learning that takes place through their own play.

Friends have been showing so much emotion lately during their play. We’re always so gentle with our babies. We give them hugs and kisses which translates into how we should treat a real baby! All of our friends love saying hi to Anna and giving her gentle hugs. Maya gave Anna multiple ‘leg’ hugs this afternoon.

As we headed outside this morning, our friends were happy to see that Rosemary had woken up from her nap to join us!

IMG_4385IMG_4388

Rosemary started her time outside time off by a little sensory experience. She began pulling at the grass. Once it got on her hands, she noticed it was wet. She loved the sensorial experience so much that she put some grass on her baby doll so that her baby doll could try Smile.

The outside sure does wonders for our friends. Anna could not have been happier just laying on the blanket, looking up at the sky. She was ALL smiles Smile.

For breakfast, children had eggs and raisins. Lunch consisted of ham and cream cheese rollups, PPC plums, and a big, juicy tomato. PM snack was strawberries and yogurt/soy butter dip.

Have a lovely evening!

WF Farm Day! 9/3/14

065

A FEW FARM NOTES:

  • We will take Group A (the older kids) most Wednesdays this fall,  when the weather is accommodating and it works for Miss Charlotte.
  • Our goal is to take Group B (2’s and 3’s) at least once this fall.  The tentative date for this will be Wednesday, September 24th
  • Please have your farmer here no later than 9:30 on farm days.
  • Please dress your farmer in clothes that are layered for cooler weather.  Boots are great, but we do have plenty of extras if needed.
  • The cost is $5.00 per farm trip which is given to our farm to support it’s role in the community as an educational farm.  I will keep track and bill families at the end of the farm season.  It this presents a financial hardship, let me know and WF will cover that cost.

Today was our first farm trip for the fall and it was a beautiful day to be out in nature!  At the farm we picked green beans from the garden, picked our own fresh raspberries (to eat!), enjoyed freshly picked tomatoes still warm from the sun, had some great conversations with the goats, held or pet a sweet little chicken, investigated the pond area, walked through the prairie, held a teeny tiny feisty little toad that jumped out of Tami’s hand and almost landed on Elliott’s head, and finally finished with a quick swing on the rope.

WF Tuesday 9/2 FABS!

*Tami is planning a Farm Trip tomorrow for Group A: Ellie, Elizabeth, Hazel, Sophie, Elliott, Aislinn, Sloane, Owen and Daniel. We have farm boots in every size, but if your Wee Friend is particular about their footwear, please bring his/her shoes along with you to school tomorrow. Please be here no later than 9:30.

Welcome Hazel! We have a new Wee Friend today who is almost exactly (2 days difference) the same age as Sophie! We are excited to have you and your family at Wee Friends!

036

Today, we begin a 12 week cycle of the Wee Friend FABS: Framework for Academic Balance. These points reflect the Literacy and Math PreK/Kindergarten requirements as mandated by the state of Indiana. We use these guides as our curriculum emerges each day. Today we jumped into counting syllables and matching sets of objects one-to-one. (LITERACY FAB K.1.13 and MATH FAB K.1.1). And of course our work of getting to know one another, routines and transitions and the fire drill! The kids nailed it.

Hope the joy of the day is emerging in YOUR world. –Laurie

Wee Sprouts: WF garden string beans. Breakfast: Cereal and mixed fresh fruit. Lunch: Whole wheat noodles with roast beef, apple slices and Cassie’s garden tomatoes. Snack: Cottage cheese and Graham crackers.

WF Friday 8/29 What will THIS day be like?

Please remember that WF will be closed Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of Labor Day. We’ll see you Tuesday!

001

What will this day be like? I wonder.
It could be so exciting to be out in the world, to be free!
I’ve always longed for adventure
To do the things I’ve never dared
And here I’m facing adventure…..

What WILL this day be like?

(I HAVE CONFIDENCE from The Sound of Music)

It’s a question we often ask as our Wee days get going. It was filled with adventure. Ellie wanted to run so we opened the door, checked for raindrops and her race began. Many friends joined her race, running round and round the track. We decided to stay outside and enjoy the cool morning. Elliott found a Ghost Nest. Many friends studied it and shared ideas about ghosts. We shared that ghosts are friendly and fun. Aislinn wanted to throw balls. We drew a target on the painting easel and invited friends to throw their balls toward the mark. Romy worked with chalk and wanted to wipe the chalkboards clean. Naia joined her and then used her wet ‘blankets’ to care for her babies. Several friends worked together to build a campfire. We heard a loud noise coming from the front yard. We met Richard, a hard working community builder who explained what the noise was and what he and his crew were doing.

When the rain forced us indoors, friends found more adventures as they went about creating the work of their passions!

Exciting! Free! Adventure! Daring!

What will YOUR day be like? Hope your holiday weekend is the same. (no pressure.)-Laurie
