Happy Monday!

In K/PREK1, we are reading a chapter book this week titled, ‘Cam Jansen and the Chocolate Fudge Mystery’. Grady shared that chapter books don’t have enough pictures so this lead into a short conversation about the different between picture books and chapter books.

After we read a few chapters, we brainstormed about our FAB topic for the week: calendars. We shared things that we read on the calendar everyday and a few things we came up with were: months, year, date, holidays, and days of the week.

Social Studies: K.1.5 Explain that calendars are used to represent days of the week and months of the year.

Today’s Facebook live session started with a story titled, ‘A House for Hermit Crab’. An art project followed using the following materials: clear contact paper, black paper, string, scissors. Friends made their own sea creature that we’ll hang up in the environment!

“A little lemon juice makes everything taste better.”—today, several friends came up to the island for a taste of lemon. There were a few who ate the lemon down to the rind while others made the classic ‘lemon face’!

Happy Friday!

We wrapped up the week in K/PREK1 by reading, ‘Paperboy’, which started a conversation about different jobs where you can earn money. We also looked at five different items that had a dollar value. Using dollar bills ranging from $1-$20, we came up with a combination for each item. For example, a LEGO set cost $15. At first, Grady suggested a $10 bill and all of the $1 bills but there were only 4 $1 bills. So we had to rethink. We decided that a $10 bill and a $5 gave us what we need: $15!

In PREK2, children identified two coins and had to determine if they were equal or if one was greater than the other. Once they were able to decide, a sign (equal, greater than, less than) was put in the middle of the coins to make the equation true.

The rest of our day was consumed by indoor activities such as art table, Legos, and various games using felt money.

Good Afternoon!

NoteA little money, a little glitter, and a little sunNote

In K/PREK1 group, David and Grady worked together to place the correct coin to the name as well as figuring out the amount of each coin.

When we came to dime, they weren’t too sure of the worth of the dime so I said it’s worth the same as two nickels which helped them come to 10 cents!

Miss Annastecia set up the art table for an activity this morning that corresponded with a book she read. Children used a wide variety of manipulatives to complete their art creation! Friends were able to talk through their thoughts on how to use the cut out circle within their drawing.

Good Afternoon!

We continued our discussion topic in K/PREK1 about money and today’s focus was on chores and allowance. In ‘Here and There’, which dives into specific topics and how each country varies, two pages solely focused on ‘chores’.

Before we started reading, I asked Grady and David what the word ‘chores’ meant. They both shared it’s something that you help with at home but also shared their displeasure for these Smile.

We learned that in the United Kingdom, parents focus more on the whole child and their happiness so children tend to do less chores. Grady quickly shared, “I want to live in the United Kingdom! Is that a relation to the United States?”—this prompted us to get out the map of the world and identify the countries we were learning about. We also learned that in Spain, the government passed a law in 2014 that states that children must help with housework, do their homework, and respect their parents. They both shared quickly that Spain didn’t sound too fun. This law also states that in a union of marriage, each spouse has to do the same amount of work.

Before heading to the journal table, we created a web where we brainstormed chores that we do at home or chores that we’ve heard about. On the web, we wrote:

-Pick up dog poop.

-Dishes.

-Make the bed.

-Rake the leaves.

In PREK2, each child got a turn to spin the coin wheel! Sophia spun the wheel and gathered the coins pictured on the section she landed on. At the end, children figured out who had the most money.

On our Facebook Live session this morning, Miss Annastecia read ‘Yoga Bunny’. At first, only Evie wanted to join but friends quickly gathered around to listen.

After the story was read, each friend got to choose a couple of different yoga poses to demonstrate for our friends at home.

Even after our video ended, Evie continued to show interest for 30 minutes! She did several yoga poses, worked on her flexibility and balance as well as her breathing.
