Happy Tuesday!

This morning we drew in our journal binders with a fresh new set of markers.  The friends used a variety of colors and a friend shared that she made a slide, so Miss Bekah wrote the word slide onto her paper.

We then engaged in a variety of activities.  We worked on a latch puzzle, built with Magna-Tiles, explored a loose part egg cup and big plastic block and sat on the reading step looking at books.

Good afternoon!

Several kids have been enjoying the addition of three dimensional art materials to work with in the art center.  Today we offered a wide variety of “new” recycled materials for kids to explore.  We also offered straws, popsicle sticks, yarn and tape to see what kids would invent with these options.  The activity was open ended so kids could follow their own interests and creativity.  Planning and visualizing three dimensionally engages the brain in ways that lead to complex higher thinking.

Though not quite developmentally ready for this project, younger friends showed interest in what they older kids were doing.  In response, we added a space that did meet their developmental needs and allowed them to explore the materials through painting.

One of our older friends helped to label the stations for older and younger friends by age:)IMG_0115IMG_0126

PREK2:  In group today, we began with some breathwork and yoga to calm our bodies.  We read the story “I am a Rainbow” which labeled different emotions we all experience.  Older friends have been learning about measurement, so we added an age appropriate board for our younger friends.  After group, everyone identified which was the shorter line and which was the longer line, then added their name to the length of their choice.

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our week by starting to explore length for our PREK1 sign in. Each group member came up to the board where they found their name and answered the question of, “What friend in class is shorter than you are?”. Children were quick to find a friend that fit the description!

K.M.1: Make direction comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, and holds more.

This morning we tried a water displacement experiment at the round table.  We each tried adding stones to cups in order raise the water all the way to the top.  We tried this in measuring cups as well and looked at the water line when we added or removed stones.  This way we could see how much water was displaced.  Younger friends really enjoyed the fine motor work, using tools to move stones or water.  Older friends made predictions about what would happen to the water.  Everyone took what they needed from the activity.

IMG_9920IMG_9926IMG_9936IMG_9985IMG_9968

There were several literacy and math/reasoning activities that arose spontaneously throughout the classroom.  One group of kids decided to chart what everyone’s favorite fruit was.  They wrote or drew each fruit and recorded with checks or tally marks what everyone liked best.  Other kids made signs, books and illustrations in the art center with plenty of words to add.  These are all ways that kids naturally practice their academic knowledge, learning through play.

Good Afternoon!

Several kids have been asking to build volcanos so we set up a “volcano building station” using sand and red ribbons to create imaginative play eruptions.  The kids asked to add some dinosaurs to play with among the volcanos.  This lead to kids wanting to make dinosaur nests so we added some acorns to serve as eggs.  The kids enjoyed making nests after that.  The play evolved all morning!

In the art center, one of our older friends decided to put her literacy skills and her design sense together to create a “Welcome Home banner” for Mom.  Authentic child lead activities like this are the best way for children to learn and retain knowledge.

Several friends have been enjoying yoga poses at group time.  A group of kids decided to use our yoga book to go through several poses on their own this morning.

Good Afternoon!

In the art center, we enjoyed making mono prints this morning.  We used our fingers and a variety of tools to create textures and pictures on a paint tray.  Then, we laid paper over the top of the painting, creating mono prints.  Some kids made five or six prints and absolutely loved the process!  Art is a critical component for brain development in young children, which is why we believe kids are so naturally drawn to it.  It strengthens executive function, improves spacial temporal reasoning (later used for math), builds fine motor skills (for writing) and grows divergent creative thinking abilities.  These kinds of art processes also provide a rich integrative sensory experience, helping to unify the brain improving the capacity for focused attention  in children.  All this development provides a strong foundation for future academic success!

Yesterday we explored several activities designed to encourage counting and letter recognition.  Kids worked on associating numerals with groups of objects they had counted.  Others sorted letters into our letter trays.  Those that knew lowercase letters sorted them as well.
