Good Afternoon!

This morning, we spent quite a bit of time in housekeeping! Friends sat in the cube, played with stuffed animals, and pretended to wash hands!

Good Afternoon!

We focused on patterns yet again for our PREK1 sign in where we used a pipe cleaner and a collection of beads to create our own unique bead pattern. A few children picked out their colors first before starting their pattern. There was a wide variety of patterns created including ABAB, AABC, and ABCABC.

K.CA.5: Create, extend, and give an appropriate rule of simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers and shapes.

Today we tried a new mixing experiment.  We measured a half cup of shaving cream and a half cup of corn starch then mixed them with our hands.  Since this was a new recipe, we talked about how we might need to experiment with the amounts.  We tried adding more of one than the other until we got the right consistency to make a sticky yet crumbly play dough.

IMG_0616IMG_3761IMG_0617IMG_3771IMG_0640

PREK2: During group we started with our usual breathwork.  We added a “breathing story” from the book “Breath Like a Bear”.  This story was called “Hot Soup”.  We practiced saying Ha-ha-ha-hot with a long open-out breath, then blowing gently on our soup to cool it.   These kinds of breathing exercises are great tools for kids to learn self regulation.  Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, bringing the body to a calm and relaxed state.  Breathwork has been known to reduce stress/anxiety, lower heartrate and increase sleep quality as well as mental clarity for all ages.

Happy Monday!

This morning, Miss Audrey brought out wooden ramps and the hollow blocks, and we drove trucks on them! A few friends also brought their trucks to the habitrail slide and went down with their trucks

Good Afternoon!

**Wee Friends will be closed Friday, April 3 in observance of Good Friday.

To kick off our week, we tackled a pattern problem for our PREK1 sign in. We used color and shape in our pattern. The pattern was an ABCC pattern that children were able to solve immediately!

Later on in PREK1 group, we read ‘What Should Darla Do?’ from our MACK collection. As the reader, we got to choose the choices that Darla made to see how it affected her day. We decided to create a pattern with the choices we made—we did a bad choice, good choice, bad choice. It was great that friends immediately recognized it as a pattern even if it wasn’t necessarily in front of us.

K.CA.5: Create, extend, and give an appropriate rule of simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers and shapes.

There was a wide range of building projects made with a variety of materials going on throughout the classroom this morning.  Kids used their creations in imaginative play, building transformers, houses and boats.  This kind of building/imaginative play fuels development in multiple areas simultaneously, which is the kind of play our classroom in designed to foster.

Kids developed fine motor skills and with larger blocks, gross motor.  Kids also developed social emotional/verbal skills as they cooperated, problem solved and shared ideas.  They used higher thinking skills like executive brain function for planning/visualizing ideas plus creative problem solving as they brought creations into reality.  During imaginative play the brain develops neuropathways which strengthen memory, creative problem solving and executive function.  It also promotes cognitive/social emotional development.  Sometimes it can be hard to recognize the vast scope of developmental growth that takes place during this type of play.

IMG_0429IMG_0446IMG_0449

In the art center we offered a squeeze bottle puffy paint art activity.  Kids were interested in paint so we added something novel to experiment with creatively.  Some kids were curious about mixed media artwork so we tried using markers first and then paint.  One friend took this further and drew scribbles all over his paper, then carefully traced the shapes with paint.  It was an interesting take on abstract art that doubled as a great child lead fine motor activity!

IMG_0485IMG_0482IMG_0558

We have had several kids interested in musical instruments, so we offered them as another activity.  The accordion is the “end all be all” instrument at this point, which offered a great opportunity to practice sharing something special.

Happy Friday!

This morning we offered a unifix cube activity.  A group of friends worked together to make a line as long as they could.  Afterwards, we used tape measures to find out how long the line of cubes was.  Hannah asked to add a pattern component to the project.  She wanted to make a pattern that used all of the colors.  She was able to create a nine color pattern and helped friends  repeat the process in a long line of cubes.  As friends took turns, a conflict about the order friends would work in arose.  We problem solved the situation coming up with a written list of names that the group could refer to any time they got confused.  We love to work on problem solving and conflict resolution naturally whenever possible.  We try to help create solutions that kids can carry out on their own.  This situation was a good example of that process.

IMG_0337IMG_0347

Another friend was interested in making paper chains at the art center.  We cut out materials for this project and several kids wanted to try it.  We realized that chains were another item we could measure.  Friends enjoyed making a chain and then using a tape measure to see how long it was.

Good Afternoon!

We focused on movement actions today for our PREK1 sign in activity. Each group member chose a card from the bottom of the board and we read the action. Friends sorted their word into either the ‘slow’ category or ‘fast’ category.

K.M.1: Make direction comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, and holds more.

IMG_3623IMG_3630

IMG_3631IMG_3632

At the round table this morning we offered a “Sink or Float” experiment and the option to create a chart based on findings.  Older friends created a chart to record what objects sank and what objects floated.  They made predictions and tested each object, then recorded what they found using tally marks or drawings to see how many objects sank and how many floated.  During this project, kids practiced making predictions, recording and charting data, writing and kid-spelling.  Younger friends explored the activity as well to see what objects floated and what objects sank.

IMG_0297IMG_0302IMG_0298IMG_0293IMG_0310

We had some interesting ideas about creations in the art center this morning.  We offered materials and assisted in brainstorming for support.  Arthur shared that he wanted to make a “trash truck”.  We looked through materials and found a box and some paper towel rolls that would work.  Arthur wanted to use a roll to dump garbage into the truck as it collected trash.  He taped a bottle cap to the end of a cardboard roll and then asked for help making a hole to tie the roll to the truck.. This was so he could lift and dump trash just like a real garbage collecting service.  He even made “trash” as he cut pieces of cardboard and folded them to fit into the garbage container.  Through following his own interests, Arthur planned a building project, selected materials, used creative problem solving to bring his vision into reality, and tested his project.  These are the kinds of child lead projects we love to see and support!  They create the conditions for deep and varied learning experiences.

IMG_0271IMG_0285

Other friends practiced writing and sounding out words using their own interests.  One friend created name tags for all of the dogs she had drawn in her book.  This is how kids learn authentically through projects that matter to them.

Good Afternoon!

Yesterday in our PREK1 group, we read ‘Caps For Sale’ which is one of our favorite stories. We love when the peddler notices that all of his caps are up in the tree..on the monkeys heads! It always elicits a ton of laughs. Today, we used the book we read yesterday to see if we were able to recall an important aspect of the book: the color and order of the peddlers hats. Children came up to the board where they identified the hat that was on the very top of the peddlers head which was red! A few kids who are starting to read were able to decipher which word said ‘red’ by sounding it out.

K.RL.2.1: With support, ask and answer questions about main topics and key details in a text heard or read.

IMG_3609IMG_3614IMG_3613

Our welcome activity was very popular this morning! Trays were made available for kids to experiment with colored water and snow. Children used a variety of tools to mix the warm water and snow such as spoons, tongs, and squeeze bottles. As children added the warm water to the snow, they watched as the snow melted. When all of the snow was melted, they had more water to work with!
