Good Afternoon!
Our three kindergarteners explored greater than, less than, and equal signs using three tools that resembled an alligator mouth! They inserted the alligator mouth into the equation and once they found the correct alligator mouth, they drew the sign between the two numbers.
K.NS.7: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group.

We read, ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson during our K/PREK1 group today. Once we had finished the book, I asked children to raise their hands if they’d like to say aloud a character that was in the story. Immediately, several hands went into the air and friends started rattling off every character that was in the story. The same thing happened with the setting. We talked about how most books have more than one setting. They became quite specific when sharing a setting. For example, instead of saying, “In the ocean”, a friend shared, “On the rock in the ocean”.
We turned our attention to the chalkboard where there were several numbers and signs. I used an alligator mouth as a guide when dealing with greater than, less than, or equal to. When children have two numbers that they’re comparing, it’s easiest to have a guide like an alligator mouth! The alligator mouth is always going to want to eat the bigger number: does an alligator want to eat three pieces of pizza or ten pieces of pizza?
We looked at the first problem that had a 7 and an equal sign. We talked about what an equal sign means and I asked if I put an 8 on the other side of the equal sign, would the problem be solved. Friends quickly shouted, “No, they’re not the same!”. We went through every equation, adding the second number after the sign to make the equation true! Children caught on VERY quick and even shared, “We did that fast!”
K.RL.2.3: Identify important elements of the text (e.g. characters, settings, or events).
K.NS.7: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group.

The rest of our morning was full of building, playdough, outside play and children wanting us to “take a picture to share with my mommy and daddy!”
