Good Afternoon!

We read, ‘But No Elephants’ in K/PREK1 group. Before we even started the story, a group member raised their hand and said, “Excuse me Miss Mindy but you just said a bathroom word.”

This lead to a conversation about the two different words: but and butt. Only a conversation meant for a preschool and kindergarten group Smile.

After the story was finished, children came up to the white board to draw a line from their equation to the answer. It was a mixture of addition and subtraction problems which kept us on our toes!

K.CA.1-2: Solve real-world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5= 3+2 and 5= 4+1).

The art easel space was shuffling with kids this morning as children painted using a variety of colors. There was also an array of paintbrushes with different sized bristles!

The circle table and art table were busy with bead bracelets and table games. Several friends made bracelets for teachers or their parents!

The chilly weather didn’t keep us away today! We got a decent amount of outside time in. It helped that our bodies were constantly moving which kept us warm.

Good Afternoon.

Miss Tami brought us a fish from her pond yesterday. We allowed him to get acclimated to his new water temperature, and then we set him free to explore the water and his new environment.

Friends are so excited to have another fishy to look at. Since we only have one we decided to name him. We were given the names, “Glub, Glub and Hey Diddle Diddle as two choices. (Haha) but we decided on Orangy! While both of the other names were adorable, we felt Orangy was more suitable for our new classroom friend. Make sure you say “Hi” to him. Smile

Good Afternoon.

Today we had a picnic! The bowls, plates, cups and all the fruit and veggies were in full use today. The dramatic play area has been a very popular area to play here lately. After we were done and wanting to put our picnic goodies away, we talked about separating the fruits from the veggies and placing them in the different basket areas.

While engaging with the magnatiles a friend put hers up to her face and that started the chain of others mimicking the fun behavior. Friends were asked what color they had that was placed at their face. What a fun way to learn our colors. Smile

Good Afternoon!

We read the second part of the Miss Nelson book today in K/PREK1: Miss Nelson Is Back!

When we got to the art table, children got out their journals and drew a picture. Our journal experience consists of a few parts: drawing a picture, writing their name/sticker/date stamp, and finally writing a description about their drawing.

We scaffold this time depending on the developmental level of each child. To start, teachers write down children’s descriptions which gives us a great opportunity to have authentic conversations about letters. When friends can identify letters, they start writing their own descriptions with the help of a teacher. And finally when they’re starting to hear sounds, they ‘kid spell’ which is where they write out words based solely on the sounds that they hear. Kid spelling at this age may look like ‘montan’ for mountain or ‘dg’ for dog.

Children usually have an easier time hearing consonants while those tricky vowels take practice!

K.RF.4.3: Recognize the long and short sounds for the five major vowels.

IMG_3014IMG_3017

In PREK2 group, friends chose one question on the leaf and had to answer it. A few friends wrote the letters by themselves while Miss Kim dotted the letters for other friends.

Our science area was busy earlier this morning as children looked at their favorite science books. They love learning about various animals, community helpers such as firefighters, and Earth/solar system.

Good Afternoon.

Today we got in the Thanksgiving spirit and colored our precut turkey’s and glued a squiggly eyeball on him/her. We enjoyed hearing what sound a turkey makes by Miss Marty doing the best I could to make a turkey sound.  I definitely got some giggles. Smile

This activity enhances our fine motor, sensory and color recognition skills. We enjoyed this activity very much. GOBBLE GOBBLE!!!

Arthur enjoyed pushing a digger truck throughout the classroom today! He zoomed it all over the front area and into the reading area. He was making his famous growling sound as he was moving around the classroom. Smile

PB160303PB160307

Meanwhile, Paige enjoyed reading a book on the rocking chair. Sometimes our friends enjoy being away from the actual reading center area to read either on the rocking chair or one of the two brown chairs we have. Whichever area they choose, we LOVE that they LOVE to read!!!

Good Afternoon!

In K/PREK1 group, we read the first story in the Miss Nelson series: Miss Nelson Is Missing! Miss Viola Swamp is one of our favorite story characters—we love the intensity that she brings to the story.

We read four story problems. Members of our group helped me write the two numbers that we were dealing with in the problem. Together, we added the two numbers together, placing the total at the end.

K.CA.1-2: Solve real-world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5= 3+2 and 5= 4+1).

IMG_3002

In PREK2 group, children used turkeys to find the total in an addition equation. It’s always helpful to have manipulatives when dealing with math equations at this age!

DSCN5528DSCN5529DSCN5531

The sensory table was opened up this morning and we soon realized that we had to change the toys out! Halloween toys were still in the sensory bin so we changed them out for some winter toys! Children took turns at the bin, waiting for their turn to explore the kinetic sand.

DSCN5469DSCN5471DSCN5472

The rest of our morning saw children disperse throughout the environment. Some friends spent their time at the art table, working on individual projects while others took some down time in the tent, reading stories with a peer.

DSCN5506DSCN5510

Maggie and Imogen were AMAZED at the snow outside so they changed up their reading spot after breakfast: right by the door so they could admire the snow in between pages.

Breakfast– Whole wheat toast with peanut butter and fresh pears.

Lunch– Whole wheat pasta with butter and shredded turkey, fresh watermelon, and fresh cucumber/pepper.

PM snack– Whole wheat english muffins with butter and string cheese.

Wee Sprout– Fresh cucumber/pepper.

Good Afternoon. I hope you all had a terrific weekend despite the sleet and other nasty weather.

The kids LOVED seeing the snow on the ground this morning and the older kids were all too happy to tell teachers about their love for the white stuff. Smile

Emma and her friend Emily were very happy to be making beautiful music with the small pianos’. This is a great activity for their fine motor skills and hearing different sounds.

We then had tons of fun in the four sided tunnel. It also has a hole in the center of it to pop our heads out of and say, Hello!

**Wee Friends will be closed:

Thursday, November 25th and Friday, November 26th.

Monday, December 20th through Friday, December 31st.

Mack and Evie rounded out the week by identifying the verb in a sentence. I read them five sentences and they had to circle the action verb!

K.W.6.1b: Verbs–Writing sentences that include verbs.

IMG_2966IMG_2967

In K/PREK1 group, we read ‘The Thankful Book’ which gave us several examples of things that people are thankful for. Once we finished the story, each friend got the opportunity to share what they are thankful for.

IMG_2970

In PREK2 group, explored rhyming words. There were several cards that belonged in pairs. Each group member got the chance to match a few rhyming words.

Good Afternoon and Happy Friday!

This morning Paige and an older friend were chasing one another by crawling as quickly as they could around the habi-trail landing. They both were in such a joyous moods and full of laughter and smiles. It’s always a wonderful feeling and sight to see our older friends engaging with our smaller friends.

PB120138PB120140PB120141PB120142

Emily has been enjoying reading to herself with the books from the classroom bookshelf. She will get out a few books to look through and then work on putting them back onto the book shelf.

We work diligently with our friends to achieve putting their books and other activities around the classroom back in their correct spots before going to another area to play with something different.

PB120149PB120155

We also enjoyed engaging in the sensory table today! We have added Arthur and Emma’s old formula scoops in the corn and bean mixture for some extra fun. They are smaller in size compared to some of our other scooping items, so it’s always fun to compare just how much of the mixture can be scooped up in the different scoopers.
