Happy Friday!

Drawing at the art table; reading; and several rounds of wrestling outdoors—> recipe for the perfect Friday morning.

I love scrolling through Teacher Tom’s blog once a week if I can and found an article that caught my eye: “What If We Raised A Generation That Could Recapture Childhood at Will?”

An interesting statistic that Teacher Tom begins with: “According to the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, 98 percent of kindergarteners qualify as “creative geniuses.” By age 25, only three percent can make that claim.”

“I sometimes try to imagine what it would do to the world if we raised an entire generation that could recapture childhood at will. It would be a world in which our institutions, like schools, would exist not to create standardized products as if off an assembly line, but rather to fill the world with one-of-a-kind humans free to pursue their highest potential according to her or his own genius.”

Good Afternoon

This morning I made up some random words to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus and friends marched around Miss Rebekah’s body and had the best time.

We then went over to the gross motor area and did some climbing. The soft star climber is a favorite of all our little ones.

We practice taking turns climbing it and then sliding down.

Happy Thursday and Happy October!

Yesterday in K group, friends were able to put a greater than, less than, or equal to sign between two numbers. Today, we did the opposite! We started with one of the three signs and for each child, I picked one number. They had to come up with another number to make the equation true! For example, I gave Z the number 8 and she had to tell me a number that was smaller than 8: she gave me 2! Then, she read the equation, “Eight is greater than two!”

We’re also continuing to fill out our charts where we discuss characters, setting, and events that occur within the story that we read that day.

Today, we read one of my favorite stories: The Giving Tree. At the end of the story, Z phrased her takeaway from the story beautifully: “The tree just kept giving her things to the boy to make him happy. All the tree wanted was for the boy to be happy.”

K.RL.2.3: Identify important elements of the text (e.g., characters, settings, or events).

K.NS.7: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group.

In PREK2, children used spiders as a manipulative when referring to the term ‘equal to’. Miss Kim had a jar of 20 spiders. She gave the four group members each a spider and they quickly noticed that they had the same number of spiders. Miss Kim kept giving each friend one spider, resulting in four equal groups of spiders!

Our morning involved a ton of hands on activities: sensory bin, painting our clay creations, and workbench for a few of our older friends!

It was the perfect fall morning. A little chilly but thankfully the sun came out later in the morning! Children occupied the art table while other older peers got some energy out by wrestling—rules were set to make sure that everyone stayed safe!

Good Afternoon Families.

PLEASE NOTE: The following is the Wee Friends upcoming closures for the rest of the 2020 year!

We will be CLOSED Thursday, November 26th and 27th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday and CLOSED a full two weeks on  December 21st through January 1st 2021 for our annual Christmas vacation. Please mark these important dates on your calendars.

This morning we extended our sponge play from yesterdays  activity and we painted with them. We took all of the animal sponges and dipped them into multiple colors and then applied the sponge to our papers. It was a great way to incorporate our hand-eye coordination, sensory and fine motor skills into our play. We were also able to talk about the colors of paint and what animal the sponge was. We LOVED it. Smile

Good Afternoon!

Today we read, ‘Pigs!’ in K group. We made sure to pay extra attention when the author introduced new characters into the equation. Once the story was over, we were quick to share who the characters were and where the story took place also known as the setting! Friends worked together to come up with two events that occurred in the story.

We also identified the beginning of the story and the end of the story.

K.RL.2.3: Identify important elements of the text (e.g., characters, settings, or events).

In PREK2, children worked with the terms ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’. Each friend was handed two groups of bears and they had to determine which group was the greater number.

DSCN6539DSCN6540DSCN6542

Friends explored a spooky activity at the art table! Children used a spider with yarn attached and white paint to create their own spider web! Conversations that were had:

1. How spiders make their webs—a common answer was silk!

2. Halloween (because spider webs are spooky!)

3. Spiders and bats which turned into a conversation about nocturnal animals!

What a beautiful morning! With a slight chill in the air, friends raced outside to explore the outdoors.

Good Afternoon.

This morning we happily engaged in a water/sponge sensory activity.

We gave the children two bowls, one with water in it and the other with no water. We also gave them a sponge to dip into the water bowl to squeeze the water out into the other bowl. We also (of course) dumped the bowls of our water into the tray.

It was an interesting sensory and cognitive activity that they all seemed to really enjoy!Smile

Happy Monday!

We read, ‘Autumn’s First Leaf’ in K group. It revolved around three leaves whose names were Pointy, Phil, and Paige. Throughout the story, Pointy started turning gold first which made Phil and Paige jealous. In the end, all of the leaves ended up gold with orange and red accents.

Afterwards, we talked about three important things that make up a story: characters, setting, and events. Friends were quick to share the three main characters and where the story took place. We chose two specific events that occurred in the story.

We’ll continue to add to our information sheets throughout the week as we read different stories.

K.RL.2.3: Identify important elements of the text (e.g., characters, settings, or events).

DSCN6429DSCN6426DSCN6428

In PREK2, children also talked about characters, events, and setting after reading, ‘Clifford’s Halloween’. They worked together to identify these three important aspects of a story!

DSCN6423

Since it’s almost October, we decided to get out our fall decoration bins! Children loved exploring the Halloween manipulatives at the circle table and wearing witch hats in the housekeeping area.
